printed out the pictures and popped them in his school bag to take home

We had a near miss last year with a year 6 class. They were doing a year end play set in the Wild West, and the teacher decided to do some costume research. Got them to do a Google image search on the word cowboys or cowboy - can't remember which - and one image came up that we certainly hadn't expected. Fortunately it was thumbnail when we spotted it first over someone's shoulder, and I was able to divert attention at the desktop that it appeared on, whilst the teacher promptly got the class to change their search terms.

 

You can't guarantee that any search result will be pure, however innocently entered, particularly with image searches which somehow seem to bypass the safesearch settings. And the pupil under discussion here certainly doesn't appear to have been innocently searching. There surely has to be some element of personal responsibility. I am assuming that the teacher of the class didn't give their pupils that search term! Does the school in question have an AUP for pupils??

Yes the school should have had reliable filtering in place but then the kid shouldn't have been searching for Porn in the first place. The mother needs to realise that it's not entirely the schools fault and after reading the above I don't think she does.

To make life easier a number of schools turn down the filtering. The downside of this is that they get anything and everything.

 

A few figures from yesterday's EMBC event ... more money has been spent on protection, filtering and security than on the MS licences (considering we are talking about a MOSS portal solution for 8 LAs).

 

And yet it is wasted when someone in a school decides that they want to turn it right down because they don't see why they should filter things ... or worse still, don't understand why filters are needed in the first place.

Even with Bloxx set up nicely and PCE running with all options set - unless you go whitelist, they'll always find ways. No home supervision.

 

We run NetSupport across our suites...that's funny. Yesterday..a class of 30, 20 screens with breasts on. Well, there's another for the blocklist...

 

EDIT: Oh yes...Shrek research...that was hilarious. Page 3, google images...Shrek getting head...Oooookkk....

The best you can hope for with google images et al is force safesearch, term checking and deep URL inspection - it is remarkably hard to get even a glimpse of porn with those 3 restrictions in place. Not advocating a lack of supervision, but realistically the technical measures have to be good as well.

Indeed. We're FE and we have users from age 14 to about 90. We also teach a very wide range of subjects, including NVQ beauty therapy. To a beauty therapist, the word "facial" is a normal part of their work vocabulary. Sadly, the same is not true for quite a lot of other internet users ...

Google annoys the tits off me though... /gwt is a filterbusting pain..iGoogle is a pain..so much stuff on there is a pain...I want JUST the search engine..

We can, but if a hard working, "normal" student who's studying beauty therapy goes searching for "facial" then they can quite innocently get stuff they didn't want. We don't have a huge amount of control over the filtering (we use the Janet service which is fairly basic) and while it won't let through some of the stuff we would get if we had no filter it still lets through some stuff which you wouldn't want.
