Wow. Were you given any indicators to fix it other than ditching that part of CC? It's a very expensive module, with yearly commitments - we haven't quite sucked on that bullet yet but I know who'd be blamed when it goes pectorals to the sky...

Agreed. We're on the verge of signing with CC, and this might actually be a deal-breaker for us.

CC attendance can write back AM & PM registers, that's it. It can't do any other units, which makes it utterly pointless for us, so we didn't buy it

Is that absolutely confirmed? Do you have a source for that?

I’m not sure we’re aware of that (I’m on the periphery of the project, as the technical side isn’t the issue).

"Please note: We do not support lesson attendance writeback to SIMS. During our extensive piloting, we found that this places too much demand on SIMS servers in schools,resulting in a detrimental impact on performance."

Also confirmed via email chain with them before we bought CC. It makes the whole attendance product pointless as far as I'm concerned, as there's no point asking staff to do registers in it for AM/PM only to then have to use SIMS for the rest of it.

CC as a whole needs a bit of a rethink - That I still have to manually mailmerge login details to both parents & students is nuts. That my staff have to manually link their 365 logins up is also nuts. It's an ok product for what it does, but it misses some really easy features.

Or you could ask staff to do all registers through CC, and stop using that bit of SIMS...

No, because this ties you into CC for the long haul & means you'd need to do reports in two places. SIMS is the source of truth for all student information in our school.

Ah okay. We're currently looking at CC, and if we adopt it, it would be the main place staff were working - timetabling, admissions, etc. would still be in SIMS but most teachers would never open SIMS and would just interact with CC. The tie-in isn't a concern to us, as very rarely do we need to look at per-lesson attendance from previous academic years (and we could export it all from CC before leaving anyway)

Think you need to be careful tho if you go down this route - As the poster above says you need the data in SIMS for census & there may be other legal requirements to consider first as well.

I really wouldn't reward bad behaviour/rubbish software by trusting it with something so important as this.

CC misses some really basic stuff so I wouldn't trust them with this at all.

Census only includes AM/PM attendance, not per-lesson.

So how are you getting your AM/PM into SIMS for your census if you don't use write back?

We are using write-back, but currently from Go4Schools where you can select which registers to write back. Is it all-or-nothing with CC?

After 9 Months of investigating this problem with ESS (off and on) it would seem we have come to a resolution and thought i would post our findings for anyone who comes across similar issue

We ended up reinstalling SIMS in a lab environment as Hardware was the focus. It was only as we were creating the new connect.ini we noticed a line that had been entered into the connect.ini

SIMSConnection
ServerName=Server\SIMS2016
DatabaseName=sims
CommandTimeout=10000
Reports
MaxNumberOfTableJoins=1

it was this last line in the connect.ini that caused reports to run for 40 minutes. after removing this line the same report took 22 seconds to run

Does anyone know what this line may have been used for as i assume it was a fix for something

Thanks

No idea at all! If you Google that exact command string, you get two results (so nearly a GoogleWhack!), both of which are to EduGeek and both of which are people posting what their connect.ini file looks like in order to assist with an unrelated issue.

FYI ours only has the below, so not even 'Reports':
[sIMSConnection]
ServerName=server\SIMS2016
DatabaseName=SIMS
CommandTimeout=10000
