Young network manager with 4 years experience in grammar schools and strong IT background seeks new position in remarkably forward-looking school wanting to invest heavily in cutting edge infrastructure (eg. blade, virtualisation, reliable wireless management systems), drive forward industry standard security, implement in-house VLE and parent/customer portal services with Sharepoint, and fast-track to becoming a leading light for ICT in schools.

Must offer nice office with wooden floors and a soft breeze in return for an exceptionally creative and technically strong individual who happily works 12 hours per day for about half what he'd get in the private business sector.

Preferably state sector, in order to retain feelings of warmth and goodness.

I'm joking. But in seriousness, I am actually not joking, and so if anyone knows of such a job... :/

Whereabouts are you?

Live in West London but currently working in home counties and can travel!

... My message was kind of tongue in cheek, I think I have been spoilt for good schools so far and may have to make the switch away from the education sector...

But if anyone has any ideas?!

Is New Milton, Hampshire, too far away for you?

We'll have an opening soon at our school.

Currently transferring all of our servers (17) to 2 ESX servers (4 x quad 2.66, 26 GB RAM) and 2 SAN servers (3TB).

Also, looking into splitting our flat network onto VLANs.

500 PCs, 300+ Laptops, 2nd generation wireless network.

Ah yes, virtualising one's existing hardware. This is the first thing I like to do nowadays, anywhere I go!

I shall check journey options to there...

10K some of you guys are so lucky, I have nothing... well nothing for new equipment. Our budget has been assigned and it is based on what we used last year for consumables and repairs, no npot for new items this year.......

SO i said we need certain items and now they seem to have a pot called Capital Money, so allowed 3K out of that....

Bring back NGFL Money all is forgiven...

I have a budget of 11.5k for 'Harnessing Technology' which is to purchase all my software licences and any new machines/laptops, i then have 7.5k for general maintenance and 15k for consumables.

I have managed to get a new server out if so far buy hagling on software licence prices.

Similar here for everything (SIMS, support contracts software licenses etc etc) = £132k ISP (LEA) is free to 10mbit and £5k per 10mbit after that.

last year spent £14k on printer consumables!!

1300 on roll, some new kit this year and a technology refresh next year on 5 year old PC's

** Amusing 4-year update **

I never got a steady desk job again, instead I went freelance as an "Education ICT Consultant". Yes, yes. An extremely poncey title, but you have to big yourself up, right?...

I enjoy 2 day weeks for more-or-less the same pay as my previous job, and enjoy working in a variety of different places, businesses, schools, shops, etc.

Anyone wanna join me? ;)
