So I dig out an old HP DL380 Gen 5 server to try and use and a Linux based backup repository for Veeam 11 but it has only 1 usable disc.

So rather than buying new discs, I'm thinking purchase a refurb server with quite a bit of storage - RAM and CPU dont need to be fancy as it is only running Linux.

What suitable servers are out there with plenty of bays to accommodate discs but only 2U?

And the more importantly doesnt cost and arm and a leg!

Cheers

We've just ordered a refurbished server for the same reason.

I went with an R230 with the below spec from ETB, we've used them before and they've been great

Poweredge R230

Xeon E3-1220v5

16 GB RAM

4x 4tb SAS drives

Single psu

iDrac express

3 year RTB warranty

We got this for just over £700

Sorry! I've been furiously re-writing parts of parent company's (1st Tech) website and haven't had a moment to look on here today.

You want to be looking at our DL380p Gen8's. They're ideal for what you need and cheap too!

Configure what you need on the Bargain Hardware link then come to me with it and I'll do the same price but with three year warranty. :)

I purchased a hp dl380 gen8 off Dave last year, to install frenas as backup storage. Its been rock solid. Going to swap freenas for a xfs file storage system. So I can implement hardened backup repository with veeam.

Yep that’s my plan just looking at current back up strategy and what to keep immutable and for how long.

So I will effectively have 3 copies of the data (all on site and hopefully the new server will

Be in another part of the school providing I can find a suitable location.

Looking at our backup strategy too, Creating three backup copies. Whole Vm backup for Business critical data- 4 times a year, incremental backup using DPM and altaro vm backup to another server

Looking at drives and I'm torn between using 2TB SAS Drives and 3TB SATA drives

Spec'ing up a backup server for Immutable backups and I can get 12x2TB SAS drives cheaper than 12x3TB SATA Drives.

Yes I know SAS drives would be better in terms of speed and better suited for servers etc but there is a big difference in terms of capacity as looking at the extra usable space with the SATA drives.

The 3TB SATA drive is double the cost of the 2TB SAS drive, so is the trade off between SAS, SATA & cost worth the extra usable storage (depending of which RAID configuration I opted for)??
