How many vms do you have on prem these days? We have 27 spread over two hosts

I think we are about between 70 and 80 over 3 hosts, 2 main ones, 1 at fall back data centre. We have nothing in the cloud server wise other than externally hosted systems at present.

 

Most servers are for 1 purpose than multiple roles too.

In the region of 120, spread across four schools and 12 virtual hosts

Off the top of my head, 30 over 6 hosts. Low density due to storage being DAS and big file servers eating the disk space, though my old ESXi host has masses of unused space.

Depending on the school, 0 (smaller primary) to 2/3 secondary (Print server, catering SW and linux DHCP/DNS box). Most things are cloud based these days. Money get spent of good internet connectivity.

2 hosts with 10 VMs. All replicated so can run all VMs on one host if required. Also have a dedicated host for the Veeam VM

3 hosts with around 46 VMs. Some multi use servers, so security does card access and some other access programs. Only because it would be a waste to run some of the programs on a single server.

4 Hosts, running 33 VMs - but I reckon I could knock it down to 3 physical hosts in the near future and trim some fat.

It hasn't really affected it tbf, we are using Server 2016/2019 and we still haven't used half of our activation's for our server licenses within our VL Agreement

You license Datacentre for your hosts, you can run unlimited Windows Server VMs on anything running Windows Datacenter. We're well past the point where that makes sense.

 

That won't cover other OS licenses such as any Linux distro that needs a paid license, or macOS. It also won't cover running client Windows.

Two Hosts running 30 VMs most are singe purpose but we have two for all the little server things.

A Previous place they had 45 VMs when I started spread over 6 blades as had just recently started down the path of virtualization. Migrated services of about 50 physical to Virtual with updated OS, ended up about 150 over 16 hosts with nearly everything split. Reasonable size FE org. Veeam was always physical with a direct connection to FC SAN for backups.

 

The only servers that had more than one role were DCs that had DNS and DHCP roles altogether.

 

Were running datacenter versions on top of vmware I think, never handled the licensing side of things as much.

Datacenter editions of server on the hosts allow you to run unlimited amount of VMs - you license the number of cores.
