Pyroman Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Heya, We're trying to buy some licensed 2 way radios, we've picked the ones we want and we're waiting on OFCOM to grant us a license for the frequency but they've come back and said we need to be a 'legal entity' and schools don't count as legal entities as we're not registered at companies house? Surely other schools have licensed radios? Can anyone point us in the direction of something useful to go back at them with please? We're doing this via our supplier Cheers
DrBeaker Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 We have them at our site and the sheer amount of traffic and overtalk means I end up turning mine off as they don't utilise separate channels so kind of pointless for me. These appear to be public ones as there's often interference from taxi firms and a local firm on ours as well.
dobsonl Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 We have ours registered in the trust name as that’s on companies house and then have our school sites listed on there as sites we can use the license. This is handy as you can just carry the same radio around all the schools Not sure if that would help you or not as you may not be in a trust.

We're doing this via our supplier CheersSomeone's misunderstanding something somewhere. It's possible that a maintained school isn't the right type of legal entity, but it clearly is one. Other public bodies use Walkie talkies and they won't be registered at Companies House either. Could be similar to VAT registration - i.e. It belongs to the local authority?

We've used unlicensed walkie-talkies in our school for many years now, but I'm looking (again) into migrating to licensed ones. The first time I priced it up we were looking at around £12k to enable all staff to have one, so inevitably, it was turned down. I know it'll be even more expensive now, but as we still have issues with non school staff in the area being on the same channel (we've tried swapping channels) and the general lack of any security with the unlicensed ones, I still want us to look to replace them. For now, I've simply registered an email address with OFCOM.

We don't use many, but we just use Baofeng UV-5R's with a stubby dual band UHF/VHF radio antenna. Works fine for us.

We ended up getting the license using the council as the legal entity and went for Hytera BD505 radios. They're not cheap but they're ace and we own the frequency so no interference from the workmen regularly fixing the roads outside!

Free licenses mean you're more likely sharing the frequency with those near you. Here, we found we were sharing the frequencies with at least 2 local businesses. Moving to licensed radios allowed us to move away from that. A license isn't expensive anyway, once you get past the paperwork.
