thimon Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 Hi all. A teacher has asked if they can play a DVD on their laptop and share their screen and system audio in a Teams meeting to students. I said technically yes Teams can do that, however that does then mean you're streaming a film online, where copyright would then come into play, possibly not allowing them to do this. What would be your advice in this situation?

Rebroadcasting is specifically against the terms and conditions of a purchase of a DVD for home use.If you are seen doing that on Teams, Microsoft could withdraw your licensing for your school for 365.Any DVD player that follows DRM would stop it happening also. The Public Video Screening License that your school signs up to specifies that it is within premises only.Don't do it. What is the DVD anyway? It might have different licensing if it's for educational use and it specifically includes a clause regarding use on online teaching platforms. Edited June 9, 2020 by paulkerton 1
3s-gtech Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 Both technically, and legally, no. I got a complaint about a video being shared via desktop sharing not working properly in Teams - all I could say was "that won't work". Video conferencing is not video streaming. 1
thimon Posted June 9, 2020 Author Posted June 9, 2020 Thank you both. I advised that yes, technically it can be done, however they may not have permission to do this. I said to contact the copyright holders of the DVD to see if they can do this. I think I'll also ask for advice from our MAT.

KK20 Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 I suspect they will be hiding behind https://www.gov.uk/guidance/copyright-licences-information-for-schools if they are eligible. The whole grey area of "playing a DVD but casting it to a class" is a different ballpark. Not withstanding the "im only playing a clip for curriculum based learning" (so not needing a licence anyway) or using VLC to chop a portion out and uploading it to clickview then linking to your VLE for a class etc etc. At the end of the day, we have MPLC alongside a reminder on inset day. That covers me at least.
