Not sure if this is correct forum sub section.

 

We have just had a third party 2019 win10 1909 and sytem

 

All the user files are redirected to the server, so in theory should not be large profiles.

 

The log on time to laptops even with good specs, new and ssd seems slow.

 

I looked at the profile size and after first log in it is about 300 mb they all say local in system properties

 

That seems large to me, especially with redirection

 

What size are your pupil profiles please?

300MB does not seem a lot to me TBH. How long does it take for a person to go from the logon screen to been able to work in Windows?

 

Are they doing appdata redirection? Check what is getting redirected, I'd exclude things like iTunes for example because I've seen that suck up a lots of space in certain scenarios.

 

You could check in the event viewer of effected PCs for any network delays, timeouts etc.

 

Test the laptop with a wired connection with as well as wireless with some other clients connected in the immediate area. It is worth bringing this to the attention of the 3rd part if the logon time is excessive.

their files, pictures and all that, Google stuff, office templates redirected and profile, but from my understanding it copies profile minus the redirected stuff. Still very new so trying to work it out. Seems one drive in the profile is 150 mb. I have asked them. I was just interested to know what size other schools have as nothing to compare it to.

Thanks, I looked on the local machines and app data is there and 438Mb.

 

We are a laptop school with good AC wireless but that seems a lot to me. Kids use lots of different laptops, so the possibility of them getting the same one with their profile downloaded is small. Hence the slow log on. If they use same machine faster.

 

Do you redirect app data or does that not go onto workstations?

That size of profile isn’t ridiculous, but it depends how much of it is actually pulled down on logon. If you’re using local profiles, even with some redirection, much of that will come from the default profile on the machine. If redirected Appdata is the bulk of that size, you will have issues when a whole class log on at once.

This is where my technical understanding struggles. If I log onto a laptop as a kid. The explorer file size of the user is approx 300mb, if I look in system properties it says the same size 300mb. If I do a properties of all users folder it says 12Gb. My understanding is redirection stops these large files. Over wireless we get about 200mbs. So the maths does not add up, unless I have miss understood things.

 

Would you say that was normal?

If users are not using same laptops and not taking them off site and do not need them cached maybe it might be worth reviewing the offline files settings if they are used.

How big is the default profile? Redirection may be cutting out large parts of the default profile from the student profiles, but it can cause issues with some software that expects Appdata to be in C\Users.

They should be accountable and fairly helpful if you have issues. At a previous job in IT there were awful issues with logons (I'm talking nearly 30mins on laptops) when I first joined and the support company that set up quite a few of the systems at the Org were very helpful even though it did not in the end turn out to be an issue with what they had done.

 

At the end of the day you are probably going to be the one first inline from users so it would be as well to push them for help.

 

Maybe try starting a laptop in safe mode with/without networking and see if that helps.

Yup, the profile that is initially copied when a user logs on. Should be in C:\Users.

 

The default user on the machine is 100mb

The local admin is 4mb

The pupil log on is 300mb - domain

 

How does that seem?

Difficut for me to check as I use mandatory profiles which delete on logoff, but my default profile is less than 2MB. My mandatory profile is 8MB with no redirection. The expanded profile (after log on) is 60MB, it just took an age to log on for me but this is on a slightly dodgy old PC.

Slow log in time can have lots of causes other than profile size what do you call slow log in times.

Sure, which is why I am trying to eliminate if it is size of profile. Do you think 300 is big? Sorry for my ignorance.

 

One computer, takes 1 minute. Put 20 in and ages. Need to time it tomorrow. On old server all on in 30 seconds. All ssd decent new computers running ac on 5Ghz
