Yep, 40 or so in Year 11 who left. 300+ in Year 7. Very bottom heavy distribution. Even current Year 11 is only two forms.

Are you at a relatively new school, or did the birth rate do something really weird in your area?

It’s almost impossible to buy even the most recent generation lower spec iPads at the moment. There’s a 2 month wait for consumers through the Apple website.

Jigsaw 24 are quite good at shipping iPads out, they're also apple certified and push to DEP within an hour of asking.

Last I heard the DFE bought 250,000 ipads from Apple and jumped the queue to get them. With the silicon shortages as well its been near impossible to get stock. I have 7 cellular ipads on order since september which were about to ship before the new models were announced which then cancelled them and put us on a waiting list for the new model!

We're really annoyed they have no more iPads available. We did manage to get some 9th Gens late last year, but had an email to say more devices were available to order and cannot order what we need. We are 1:1 iPad deployment for students and staff with MacBooks for staff too so the devices that are left to pick from are completely useless to us so won't bother.

1:1 iPads and Macbooks for the staff?! J.H.Christ how much money does your school have?! :jaw:

We've just had an additional allocation... A whole twelve. Either Toshiba Dynabook laptops or Lenovo flippy things that seem to be essentially tablets with a keyboard attachment.

So I can only assume it's "We've got a warehouse full of devices nobody wanted.. Let's just try and foist them off on everybody"

Still at least it's not Geobooks with baked in malware..

Chromebooks are only out of stock - so should return?

We've been allocated 3 more devices today. Dynabook laptops or Dynabook tablets with keyboards currently available. We've had Dell and HP laptops and iPads previously. I'm wondering whether to throw a Windows tablet into the mix.

DfE email states more Chromebook stock should be coming soon. Am holding out ordering until then.

If its the same dynabook laptops we had, they're not bad tbh! Added drivers to MDT, reimaged, no issues. Seem zippy enough.

IT Suites for the ICT lessons are all iMac's too and all Teaching Assistants and support staff have a Macbook aswell.

They really are not as expensive as you think. £707 is the cost of a MacBook Air to us which is what non teachers get, teachers get the Pro, at £915 we would expect 8 years out of that. Best trackpads, decent screens, battery life of around 20 hours , we have recently refreshed our 2013 Airs with 2020 M1 13" Pro's after 8 years. We got rid of fixed teacher stations 9 years ago staff just 'Airplay' their Mac to a TV, or use their iPad Airplayed if they want to draw or write.

We are just a high school with the same funding formula as other schools, but Senior Management invest heaving in ICT.

One of the schools I look after got a set of 10 dynabooks and none of them charge now, and I suspect never did, or only for a very short time. There's other reports of the same in here from others. Probably a bad batch though.

Twice what I'm paying for HP Probooks though

But yeah, it's humans that are expensive, not computers

I can now order 2 more devices. I was wondering about the Dynabook tablets. Do they have both forward and backward facing cameras? Also what ports do they have on them? I looked at the spec on the TechSource website but this is for the standard Dynabook not the cut down DFE offering.

They have an 8 year replacement cycle though. Do you get 8 years off the HPs?

Also they use AirPlay to project, so don't have our expenditure on replacement HDMI cables! I recently worked out over the last two years I've bought basically as many replacement HDMI cables for classrooms as we have teachers. I'm probably going to issue each teacher their own HDMI cable now instead (and hope they don't mash the face plates by constantly inserting/removing cables!)

Are those the ones where the charger is the same size and right next to the audio jack?

To answer your questions. Yes, they do have forward and backward facing cameras. It comes with charging port, one usb, usbc, hdmi and a headphone jack. Our school ordered bunch of them last year and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Attachable keyboards never arrive and a few of them doesn't charge up. It was hard to find a suitable case because of it's rarity and few of them ended up with a cracked screen. Students and teachers have reported that it was slow in response too.

I ordered Win Laptops on Tuesday and I received an email saying my devices were being changed from Lenovo 100e to Lenovo 300e

We've recently had our allocation extended too. I went on the website a few days ago to see what was available, but it was only the Dynabooks. I went back today, and I'm still only being offered the Dynabooks. I'm not sure I want to risk an order in the hope they get swapped for Lenovo 300e in case they actually send me the Dynabooks!

anyone else having problems turning on the HP 245 G8's we have 41 of them and they wont always turn on, I have to keep holding down the power button which sometimes works.

I just found the solution to this. The lids are poorly shielded, and if you stack one directly on top of another, the lid below causes the open laptop above to think that its lid is closed. Move the top laptop 1cm to either side, and the power button magically works or the screen comes back on.

Amazing! I'm assuming you found that out by chance...

I have a stack on my desk, not working (apart from the one at the bottom). I would unbox one, turn it on as I carried it to my desk, put it down on the pile...gone! Eventually I put one down slightly off-centre, then moved it over, and it dawned on me.

If the hdmi cables kept getting lost I'd tie them to the wall.

Dunno if they'll last 8 years, 4 so far I think, so probably, but even now overall that's cheaper.

Dell laptops used to do that magnet turning off the computer above trick

How did this work out for you?

We see the Lenove 300e offered only as Chromebooks...?

The only Windows laptops available appear to be these:

Dynabook Satellite Pro E10-S-10Q - Intel Celeron N4120 - 4 GB RAM - 64 GB SSD - 11.6" IPS 1366 x 768 (HD) - Wi-Fi, Bluetooth

It seems we need to use up our allocation by 5 p.m. today (or lose it?)... The BM is keen but from what I can see available (and from what I see in this thread it might not even be worth the hassle - even if they are 'free')...

There are no iPads available as that would have been our first choice, only Windows Tablets, Chromebooks and Windows Laptops.

Out of those choices I am leaning towards the laptops (as we don't use Google enough to be worth learning Chromebooks and I have no experience with managing Windows tablets).

Also, can I completely wipe them and will they take a full fat Windows install... and how repairable are they?
