Thanks - the area we are in we are not expecting many to return if we request them back, if say the internet stopped working on them then I'd expect we might see more return to be reset.

 

We are not sure what are plan is as yet.

Why laptops and tablets need resetting

 

After 30 September 2021, Microsoft Intune and Cisco Umbrella licenses will expire on ‘Restricted’ Windows devices provided by DfE.

Users will be able to freely access any online content and devices will not be maintained with future updates, including virus scans and software upgrades. It’s your responsibility to safeguard the young people in your care.

The resetting guide includes information on how to reset passwords for different types of device. This will allow you to restore them to factory settings and apply your own security software.

If you ordered ‘Standard’ Windows devices that were provided without security settings, no action is required.

It's a little bad of the DFE to just fully release these devices & discharge the responsibility over to the school. It doesn't really bother me on our part, as we put all ours on our own intune/filtering setup out of the box anyway.

 

But I had to sign a waver when ordering it setup like this. Some smaller schools (Primaries...) may not be aware of this & suddenly they've got themselves safeguarding risks they weren't ready for & in some cases, can't easily support.

 

Personally I'd have locked out all the devices, that way it forces the school to act....

Well the original paperwork had the filtering ending last year and it just got increased as the lockdowns came through, but then again the scheme wasn't really thought through properly to begin with.

 

Thankfully the majority of "DfE" configurated laptops we assigned to students have been returned as our Y11 kids leave next week, and everything we ordered from Jan was the unmanaged option so we could put them straight into our network and AoVPN them (and meant students had proper office available and not just the web version)

We are asking for all of ours back over the summer so we can update them. We have some unallocated though, so can probably swap them over. We've asked for Year 11 and 13 to return theirs, I'll let you know how much success we have!

Yup and yup.

We enrolled chromebooks into our domain, but the Windows laptops just went straight out. We don't have InTune or a internet-addressable filter or any of that stuff so there's absolutely zero way we could manage them off-site beyond a Senso instance.

We've had around 40% of them come back so far.

Did anybody get any Dell Latitude 3190's?

And if so, did you manage to PXE boot them?

 

Spec sheet for them says they have USB 3.1 ports, but our USB 3.0-GigE adapter doesn't seem to be working with the one I've got to test.

 

I've made sure boot sequence is set to UEFI, UEFI Network Stack is enabled, and USB Boot Support is enabled, but I still get no PXE option.

The closest thing I can find from Dell is this page that mentions enabling Thunderbolt Boot Support and TBT (and PCIE behind TBT) Pre-boot Modules, 'even if you are not connecting to a Thunderbolt dock', but the area of System Configuration that provides this option isn't there in BIOS, even after updating to the latest.

 

Could always be something about this specific adapter it doesn't like, but I've confirmed the adapter works on another model of RJ45-less laptop we have.

You need the driver for the usb ethernet chip in the bios for it to pxe boot usually.

I think we just went to dell.co.uk and ordered one from there. It doesn't list the 3190 but it does work, also didn't need any additional drivers for this...

Sharp (who also own SmartBoard and make iPhone components) bought them and revived the DynaBook brand. Really impressed how they also made the driver and support docs back catalogue available.

 

The Dynabooks we've recieved as part of the scheme are suitably basic - but I have much more confidence in them than the post financial scandle/Fukashima Toshibas.

 

I don't suppose you have a link to the drivers? I have trawled the dynabooks site but can't find the Satellite Pro ET10-G-104 model.

Some months back we received a small number of iPads from the DfE but as we loaned out our laptops first the iPads never got used and got left in the boxes. The plan is to buy more iPads to make a class set and start using them for teaching. We have got Apple School Manger setup but not added any devices yet and we have a trial of Moslye.

 

How do we get the DfE iPads transferred to us so we can add them into Apple School Manger?

 

What is the process to get an Apple organization ID or is that not required at this stage?

If ASM is set up, go to Settings>Enrolment Information you should see your Organization ID. You'll also need the order number that starts in HYB.

 

Hope Moslye is more reliable than Lightspeed, which we went for...
