Management are telling me these laptops from both the DfE and local authority are for the children to keep permanently.

Is that correct?

I think the LEA-provided ones for social care children are theirs to keep, but the ones the schools ordered directly from the DfE/Computacenter) belong to the school.

I've put my order in for 13 laptops and 4 router this morning from the DfE

Also picked up 18 from the local authority for children with social workers.

I was also told this by my Headteacher, so I put the question to our LEA 'consultant' and the reply was "It is a Local Authority device that has been gifted to the school but because the child is leaving the school then they will be taking it with them as they will still be under a social worker. They will be able to use it to contact the social worker and support learning. If they weren't leaving the device would stay with your school."

This seems to suggest to me that it will only stay 'with the school' as long as the student is at the school, but essentially it is the student's device to take with them when they leave us (obviously still in education and with a social worker as we are Primary/Junior school age) - maybe this is different for older children actually leaving education? I'm also not sure how we would liaise with all the student's 'new' schools to make them aware the child has our.... I mean an LEA device, or if we even need to...?

I received them, I put asset stickers on them, I checked they turned on, I put them in a box, I gave them to the pastoral team.

I got on with others things.

I would love it to be this simple, but as others have said the Chromebooks need to be enrolled in the LEA GSuite and need the Cisco Umbrella filtering software installing.

To make matters worse our student is leaving us in a couple of weeks!

If I make the Chromebook only available to the student's GSuite log-on, when they leave us and I delete their GSuite account they will no longer have access to the Chromebook... I know technically it will no longer be my problem, but I can't help being concerned.

Can anyone shed any light on this issue, I am getting no guidance from the LEA or the School...

Dose this apply to the DFE laptops for Year 10 students or the social worker requested ones, or both? (I was told this about the social worker ones, but thought the ones for year 10s were supposed to belong to the school).

I can only speak for the LEA ones for children with Social Workers, as these are the only ones we received - as we are a Junior/Primary we did not receive ones for any other type of student. I did think it might be different for older children (unless they also have a social worker..?).

Our Chromebooks came with Chrome upgrade licenses for our G Suite domain, so I was able to just enrol them into our domain as normal and hand them over. We can remotely disable them when we want them returned. If you haven't received Chrome upgrades for your G Suite domain, or the Chromebooks belong to some other domain (LA?), then I don't see what there is for you to do other than hand the things out.

I haven't sat down to sort out the Umbrella thing yet, but that can be applied to enrolled Chromebooks at any time (although I don't think it's a deal-breaker for SLT in this instance).

It's my understanding that Y10 laptops are owned by school, to be returned to school.

For values of Lincolnshire, we've (MAT) been told that the social care laptops are owned by the individual school and also stay with the school if a student leaves (for distribution to the next student who needs it).

I have pointed out that this doesn't exactly help any Y6 students over the summer who aren't staying within the same MAT and isn't really in the spirit of the scheme.

I'm shocked, I tell you - shocked!

Off-topic: You reminded me of a scene in Casablanca:

Context: German officers are cross that patrons of Rick's café sang La Marseillaise over the top of their own carousing and so ordered the café closed. Captain Renault has to make up a reason for closing the café and choses illegal gambling.

:)

Back on topic...

Please let me know if you get it done - it is a deal breaker here. I searched for "boobies" (rude enough to see if things are blocked, not so rude that the LA would send a SWAT team around to the school) and inappropriate stuff was fairly well blocked on the W10 devices, but not so much on the Chromebooks.

Don't you just configure the chromebooks have to have umbrella extension from admin.google.com, and they auto install it?

That's the theory, but it doesn't seem to happen. I know someone else had the same problem, but the thread was deleted for some reason. (I found the "headline" elsewhere). The app seems to install, but not the extension.

I've just enrolled our Chromebook in our LEA Google Admin page and gone through the 'Apps and extensions' section in the admin portal to install the Cisco Umbrella client (app) and the Cisco Umbrella client (ext) following our LEA guide...

Nothing has happened... :( None of the other apps they have provisioned appear to have installed either...

How do I even tell if it's installed?

It seems to be in some sort of Guest Managed Session is that the problem? I have never used a Chromebook before... HELP!

I dont think you can laod extensions in guest mode

Log into a chromebook and see if it's in the list of extensions

Way past you. It's not there, but the App (and Google Classroom, which we push out in addition) are.

Hmmm... that might explain things. I'm not convinced our are in Guest Mode though - how would I check?

there were some changes in the last year so it may be out of date - ill have a look in ours for the specific wording as there is 2 different types

@Koldov

If you log into GSuite Admin > Devices > Chrome Management > Managed Guest Session Settings you can configure it there - Apps seems to be mentioned here.

If you click there, thers 3 tabs Users and Browsers, Kiosk, Managed Guest Sesions

Kiosks (Basic guest mode)cant me MITM'd or have policy enforced much further than opening preconfigured webpages, this used to be how you did guest access.

Managed Guest sessions is what you want as you can configure a bit more on those, but the settings are in the seperate tab to your normal user config

edit

You can force a chrome policy sync by logging in then going to chrome://policy in the browser and hit refresh - then reestart the device and it should be as configured in admin

Thanks - I'm pretty sure they're not in any guest mode as they are signed on as specific users.

Oh, be sure your deployment policies are aimed at the Users OU, not the device - the apps are deployed to the Users

Unfortunately this is an LEA managed Google Admin portal, so I will have to wait for a reply from them...

ask nicely they may give you an admin account! its all audited to hell anyway so you couldnt break something and blame eachother so no reason not to!

I'm going to give it a go. Wish the documentation had made this clear if that's the fix!

Surely it should just be "turn on and check" for you then?

I have been given some sort of account to log on to the admin portal, but it seems very limited.

Yes, but sadly one of the things we MUST check is that the device has enrolled and the other is that the Cisco Umbrella app has installed...

But as we are not a Google Chromebook school I am not sure why we even got one!

I don't know anything about using them and I don't have any guidance from the LEA about how to do anything other than enrol it and install the app (which I don't seem to be able to as I don't know how to get it out of the managed session)!

Well, that wasn't in the documentation. Slowly getting there; both now installed, but fails the recommended "InternetBadGuys" test.

I'll take another look tomorrow.
