discoveranother Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Hi all, Had a laptop with Windows 7 using Smart Notebook. Upgraded to Windows 10 Pro Education and now Smart Notebook is no longer interactive. Have another laptop with Windows 10 Pro and works fine !!! Using version 11.4 of Smart Notebook, but it works fine on Windows 10 Pro and even Windows 10 2015 LTSB. The error is the USB as per screenshot below. Have tried updating but to no avail. Have searched Google but no help. Any feedback very much appreciated.
ZeroHour Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Right click -> properties -> Details -> Hardware IDs and post the results just to confirm that device is the board and not a motherboard driver issue.
matty-normy Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 We had issues with smart notebook across our sites various errors and boards misbehaving and fixed it by using smart notebook 19. Free to use as long as you have smart boards.
localzuk Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Was this an in-place Windows upgrade? If so, you probably need to reinstall the SMART drivers - as the Win 7 drivers differ from the Win 10 drivers.
dr_Wiley Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 You might be able to just update the driver by pointing it to search the installation folder, that is what we did to get our older boards working with windows 10
3s-gtech Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 On Windows 10, our machines pulls the latest drivers down even though Smart Notebook is still on 11, the updater still works.
PyROm Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Might be worth noting that after 1/7/2020 you wont be able to activate notebook versions before 17.0 - https://www.smarttech.com/support/discontinued-products 4

Duke5A Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Smart 11.4 drivers will load in Windows 10, but the interaction is buggy. I get around this by replacing the drivers with ones pulled out of a 2014 installer. Smart Drivers 2014.7z 2
DrBeaker Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 This is very interesting. We're in the middle of a computer upgrade program and Windows 10 rollout upgrades from 8.1. We've only got Smart 11.4 for the site. But in the 5x IT suites it works I believe fine. Not had any reports but neither have I tested it extensively expect the touch and pens work. That's good enough for me.

Does this mean that we will all have to start paying their exorbitant annual fees, even though we have the perpetual licenses for 11.4? I flaming hope not. 1

I need to calculate how much this is going to cost us each year EDIT: Between £750 - £1000 per year. Edited January 31, 2020 by thimon
PyROm Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Im currently looking at prowise presenter (suggested by someone else on these forums), its free, web based and they have a UK office. It can be linked to google drive/onedrive/dropbox, has its own storage for presentations and can download produced files. It will also open .notebook (smart notebook files). Not fully tested it here yet, but just a quick play with it and it looks good.
masond Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 We had the same issue, smart 11 with win7 worked just fine! Win10 and smart no longer support older smartboard models,we found that installing the free smartbook 19 with the newest product drivers helped us get it working again abet some really old boards are no longer supported after smart14
PyROm Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Smart notebook 11.4 with the version 12 drivers works fine on windows 10 for us (although on our test laptops for 1909 a windows update seems to have started making it crash after showing the loading splash screen)

simpsonj Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 So we won't be able to activate any new installations after July 1st. Super. I guess best bet is to try the free SMART Notebook 19 on the various (really old) models of board across the school, and then plan to replace those it won't work with. Out of interest, I presume this is just for the SMART Notebook software, not necessarily the drivers? Most staff here seem to use Powerpoint rather than SMART Notebook itself.
simpsonj Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Another troubleshooting tip, make sure the SMART Service is running, a few times I've installed the drivers, nothing has worked, and it's because that service no longer seems to run automatically.
3s-gtech Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Does Smart Notebook 11 activate online or does it just do an internal lookup of the key?
discoveranother Posted January 31, 2020 Author Posted January 31, 2020 Thanks for all these great replies. I did try drivers version 12.xxx of the Smart Notebook at the time but still didn't work on Windows 10 Pro Education. But I will try some of the other solutions posted in the replies as well as the alternative to Smart Notebook.
