browolf Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 I'm surprised this hasnt come up sooner, I mean its a site full of (mostly), dare I say it ;-) nerdy blokes There's no way I can be the only person who has done or is doing, using a dating site. Anyone use a dating? just wondering really, I did for a while until I didnt need to. :-) Their (sites not females, well actually them too but) nature is quite fascinating. I found them whilst generally not following any rules of common sense a hotbed of behavioural psychology. WITHOUT slagging off the opposite sex or being rude, anyone got any anecdotes or recommendations they wish to share. here's mine: contrary to common sense, a less detailed profile works better than a more detailed one. In the former, they're hoping to have stuff in common, in the later, they're sure they dont.
Joanne Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 whatever happened to going out with your mates and meeting new people in the pub? I think dating sites are a rip off... and oh so slightly dangerous!! ie/ make love happen guarentees to find you love within 6months... PAH I say... PAH!

ICT_GUY Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 I have a rule only to date teachers, ok one teacher, but its an unbroken rule!
tom_newton Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 Worked for me, and for one of my colleagues. Beats the hell out of trawling bars (i'd already exhausted Friends-of-Friends!). My colleague is already married, and I should be too in september '09.
crc-ict Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 (edited) I have to endorse Simon's recommendation for Plentyoffish.com at the moment. It's free, and I've just got chatting to a nice-sounding local woman on there, and I've got quite a good feeling about it! I've been dabbling in the dating site game for a while - I'm far too much the stereotypical IT guy to have any luck in bars etc - but not had a great deal of success. I did meet a lady from another site last year, and she was everything she had told me, but we didn't exactly hit it off and didn't meet again - distance was a bit of a problem. I think that's the main drawback with those sites. Putting, say, 'within 50 miles' on a search seems OK, but when it actually comes to the reality of being quite a long way apart, you realise it is an issue. It's a drag making a long journey regularly, and then there's the logistics of not knowing each other's areas. I guess it's OK if theres a good selection of suitable ladies in the local area, but some sites I've seen give me about 3 or 4 results when searching for people meeting my criteria within a sensible distance. And given my worse than 2% response rate, I'm not paying £25 a month for odds like that! My tip is not to expect 'no thanks' replies, even when the site you use gives links for them. I've found very few women bother. And few women seem to respond to 'winks' either. Edited May 21, 2008 by crc-ict
crc-ict Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 I have a rule only to date teachers, ok one teacher, but its an unbroken rule! You'd be OK then - certainly local to me, there are loads of teachers on those sites!
Simcfc73 Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 Using them now, 5th date lucky and alls is going well. My rules after the dates Don't drink too much, beer goggles can be embarressing. If they talk about their ex all the time.. run If you want to get rid of them talk about your ex If they don't have a up to date pic... run faster
Michael Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 I've never used a dating site, but I do hear of more and more people meeting this way. I say fair play to them myself Another type of dating some of my mates have tried is speed dating. Another good way of meeting people I suppose!
joe90bass Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 I've never been one for meeting women in pubs/clubs..... I tried a few sites a while ago, and went on a few dates. Speed dating is good fun as well! Though I did notice most of the women at speed dating were teachers........ Fortunately I ended up meeting my fiance through a blind dates organised by mutual friends

StewartKnight Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 I had a friend once (female) who used a dating site. She had a number of "dates" and they all turned out to be psycho "Norman Bates" loosers who could only get dates by joining a dating site.... just sayin' thats all!

Even the ones they only talk to are quite bad by all accocunts. However if you're a decent guy who doesnt a) ask them out after 2 seconds b)want to talk about sex all the time You're on to a winner!
Pete10141748 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 In this day and age, where people spend more time online than outside, I think it's a justified way of meeting someone. Personally I've never, and would never, pay to join of these sites. But to those who do, fair play to ya.
sidewinder Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I paid for one once, total waste of time Plentyoffish is perfect, loads of people and totally free. I havent found them to be all that great though. I thought Id do great on them since Im not really a stereotypical IT geek, but you have to work hard to keep someone you like interested, as theres so many more men than women there. I think my problem was that I didnt suggest meeting up soon enough...Id stay chatting to them for ages and they'd lose interest, which is fair enough, it is a dating site afterall. Some of my friends have done well though. My flatmate met his girlfriend of 4 months on there. Im lucky that in the last few weeks things have started to fall into place for me, so havent needed the site. 'Seeing' several different girls atm so its all good
browolf Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 I think my problem was that I didnt suggest meeting up soon enough...Id stay chatting to them for ages and they'd lose interest I had that problem too, except I'd loose interest, if they didnt. Other would seem more interesting at the time. Seeing' several different girls atm woh you're like a superhero geek or something.
webman Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Not a dating site as such; but I met my previous girlfriend through WhereAreYouNow.com. The distance (~40miles) was eventually an issue so didn't last too long. My present girlfriend is a friend of a friend, local, and is going well so far I don't think dating sites is something I'd personally use in the future; perhaps a last resort if I was at a bit of a loose end. But I do agree that they are a modern, acceptable way to meet new people.
farmerste Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 hi folks, although i have found dating sites to be rubbish i have found that the only thing that has really worked for me is :- Alcohol and poor judgement
Friez Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 The very thought of Internet dating quite frankly freaks me out. I dunno, I guess I just like to know the person in real life before I make any kind of romantic advances or anything, the idea of picking a random person off the interweb and hoping for the best just seems surreal to me. Met my girl at a bus stop when I was at uni and we've been together for over 6 years
browolf Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 I dunno, I guess I just like to know the person in real life before I make any kind of romantic advances or anything well of course, sensible people treat a dating site simply as a way of finding/meeting people, if they seem interesting, meet them one or more times, then have a date or just be friends.
