Hi All,

In pour campus currently we have deployed office 2016. We are moving to teams and sharepoint setup for academic staff. We are looking to deploy office 365 with new image?

Do you think this will be better than going with office 2016?

Thanks

Yes if you are serious about going to teams and sharepoint yes... use office 365

Its alot faster saving directly online and crashes less.

When working with onedrive client, office uploads first then lets the client download a copy, we found this important as the other way round files are saved locally but locked while office is open giving only a few seconds for onedrive to upload changes when people logoff, which ofcourse it fails to do.

Sorry to hijack, but is Office 365 (desktop apps version that you install), included as part of annual EES / OVS agreement? I thought it was only part of the A3 and A5 365 subscriptions?

But.... as part of the Office 365 A1, faculty and students can download and use desktop apps on their own personal devices?

Office 365 would probably be better, but the licensing for it has been an absolute PITA. It seems this is now the correct way to license and deploy Office 365 (as of 01/12/2019) https://contosoedu.com/deploying-office-365-proplus-device-based-subscription-for-edu/.

The desktop apps are covered with the Office 365 ProPlus license, whereas the rest of Office 365, such as Outlook, OneDrive, etc are covered by the Office 365 A1 license. There are various ways to obtain the licensing, but we have ours included in our EES/OVS agreement (or whatever it's called now). It used to be calculated by your FQTs (Fully Qualified Teachers, so you didn't include support staff for example), but I believe it's now FQEs (Fully Qualified Educators, which is their way of saying anyone who works in the school).

Web stuff is covered by A1 licence.

You can get ProPlus by either subscribing through 365 or by having an Office volume licence agreement.

Can anyone confirm if DBA licencing is only available to EES customers? This is what I was told when I last asked my reseller for it but there didn't seem to be any solution for us OVE customers, IE the majority of schools in the UK who aren't in the trust.

DBA has been replaced by DBL and has since been replaced again by DBS. DBA was only really supported in the US and still wasn't a good solution for Office 365 licensing. Apparently DBS is a much better solution with wider global support from Microsoft.

Cheers, just reading about it now; didn't realise it can be obtained on a device basis for school owned devices for free as part of EES - why don't they just make it available in the licenses section of 365 instead of having to mess about going to your provider.

I'll contact my reseller again then and see what they say. Last time I asked I was told it was EES customers only, despite it being rolled out world wide.

I'm still being told this is EES customers only not OVE/ES customers (Which most schools should be on? If I'm not mistaken as EES is for companies with other 500 staff (Or licences))

Sorry, its probably me, but I'm losing track of the question a bit :)

If it helps. we licence Office 2019 through an OVS-ES agreement, this entitles us to add on Office 365 ProPlus licences. It also entitles us to have Office 365 A1 Plus licences.

Therefore currently we deploy the Office 365 C2R client and use the A1 Plus licence to activate Office via device based activation as detailed here: https://sysadminedu.wordpress.com/2017/01/07/step-by-step-guide-to-deploying-office-365-pro-plus-with-device-based-activation-with-sccm/

However it appears that this is now deprecated (but still works for us) in favour of the new method called Device Based Subscription, which needs another licence adding in from your reseller. Details and requirements can bee found here: https://contosoedu.com/deploying-office-365-proplus-device-based-subscription-for-edu/

After contacting my re-seller this is what they have told me as well. You have to be on EES agreement not OVSES.

Get EDU A1 and office 365 apps for students and staff to install at home on their own devices, but its not available to the school to install on their devices as part of OVSES.

Upgrade to 2019 Pro Plus looks like the way we will go from 2016 Pro Plus.

Which is exactly what Microsoft don't want people doing, using 2019 rather than 365! I've put my thoughts back to my reseller on the matter so they can pass them on. Maybe if a number of people do this they might just listen...maybe.

I've contacted Microsoft and our reseller about the new SKU. Reseller can't do anything, as it is EES only. So, we'll see what Microsoft do. Seems stupid to release something for schools and then restrict it to license types that most schools in the UK won't ever have.

I've contacted my reseller about it, but haven't heard back yet.

My reseller has also confirmed that it cannot be added to our OVS-ES agreement. Some great Microsoft logic going on here because both EES and OVS-ES appear to be exactly the same, apart from the amount of users they cover. OVS-ES is 1-999 users and EES is for 1000+ users. We're a small school with 650 students and 90 staff and because of that we are simply unable to use Office 365 ProPlus.

Interesting thread, but I'm still slightly confused.

From what I understand, DBS (Device Based Subscription) is the latest model to activate C2R Office 365 ProPlus.

From the article here : https://www.licensingschool.co.uk/licensing-blog/2019/08/19/office-365-proplus-device-based-subscription-for-education/

Microsoft announce an Office 365 ProPlus Device-based Subscription for Education, which means that educational institutions can now assign an Office 365 ProPlus licence to a device rather than a user – useful, of course, where shared devices are used.

The experience for users is that those who DO have a User Subscription Licence including Office 365 ProPlus will be able to use the apps on the licensed device as well as their associated cloud services like OneDrive, while completely unlicensed users will be able to use the apps on the device and to save files locally. Using Office 365 ProPlus in this way doesn’t count towards one of the five allowed installations for a licensed user.

This new, free, add-on licence is available from 16 August, 2019 for customers who have an Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) agreement where they’ve covered all Education Qualified Users with Office 365 ProPlus or a suite that includes it. They’re then entitled to as many Device-based Subscriptions as the number of Education Qualified Users.

The Device-based Subscription replaces the Lab and Library benefit that was the previous solution for institutions needing Office installed on a device basis, and note that this benefit remains for OVS-ES agreements where the new solution is not available.

I've no idea why I would not be eligible for the above licence, but I've fired an email off to our man at Capita.

Basically, if you have 1000+ users, you should be on the EES licensing model. If that's the case, you can make use of Office 365's DBS licenses.

However if like my school you have 999 or less users, you're on the OVS-ES licesensing model, meaning that you're not eligable for Office 365 DBS licenses. This basically rules out being able to use Office 365 because without DBS, Office 365 becomes unusable ina shared environment.

DBS is only for EES customers (large, university sized generally), not OVS-ES. We are stuck in limbo at the moment.

Limbo, great!

Can we move from OVS-ES to EES?

Unfortunately it's tied to how many users you have, so if you don't have 1000 or more students, you're stuck on OVS-ES.

We've got over 100 users!

Our current licence expires at the end of May.

In that case, when you renew your license, your supplier should put you on EES anyway due to how the model works.
