Recycling cables

We have A LOT of old power leads, VGA cables etc. Is there anyone that recycles/picks them up for free? Seems a waste to put in the landfill.

We just have a WEEE skip on site from Enviro Electronics - FREE IT Disposal Service Doncaster, Scunthorpe, Sheffield, North linconshire, Grimsby, Leeds,

 

We put all cables, scrap IT and any other scrap electrical in that and get it collected when we have filled it. So far it's been working well.

+1 for enviro electronics. They take *anything* electronic from us and nothing but praise for them. Just remember to give a week notice when you want the bin emptying.

Notable exception: Fluorescent tubes (strip lights) as they include mercury.

We use Enviro Electronics too. They leave us a bin and we just fill it up as we go and give them a call to collect and leave a new empty bin.

Appologies, i was talking about anything with a plug on it. The tubes are disposed in a seperate skip for the site team.

No problem and it wasn't a criticism (although in my clumsy manner it probably comes over that way)

Wish I had known about them several years ago when I chucked several bin bags of euro power cables

 

The previous It tech had saved them up for several years from the look of it - presumably while trying to find a way to recycle them

 

I tried several companies - none would take them even if I delivered them!!

Yup same here for enviro electronics - Them leaving a bin (or two) on site makes life so much easier than other companies we've used in the past that would require us to move stuff onto their vans.

Of week 3? How much e-waste do you have? I think 2x collections was ours. Although to be fair we did a collection pretty much every holiday period anyway. We just didn't have the room to store stuff.

I'd suggest it's more about storage than what's in them. For example a projector lamp is unlikely to break in the bin but a tube certainly will.

We had a heap of old PCs and such like which had been stored in a room that is now our new office so it all had to go in one hit. Enviro electronics have been terrific, they took away at least three old smartboards, they will take empty toners as well as a couple of defunct UPSs.

Our local domestic tip takes them in their "small appliances" skip - they disappear somewhere for recycling according to the site staff.

used to fill up an old PC box with them, and when PRM used to collect kit, they would take them too (same with old Network leads etc) and they never batted an eyelid. Now, we just have bags that we put our small WEEE in, and they come and collect the bags when they are full

We have used them for a little while now without issue and I believe you would probably get similar positive comments from other members of Edugeek (some relevant comments posted in this thread)
