Playback of .FLV files

Hello,

 

I have been asked numerous times in the last few days by different staff asking to use You Tube for lessons. Unfortunately here it is blocked by RM so we cannot access it.

 

I have tried to download a sample flv file from an unblocked site using Firefox and Video downloadhelper.

 

I have now got a .flv file that nothing seems to be able to open.

 

What can i use to open the software. I have tried VLC Player and get this error:

 

ffmpeg: av_open_input_stream failed

You need a flash player, I googled .flv and found this Free FLV Player. Download the Applian FLV Player

RealPlayer plays FLV files, though unless you already have it installed (for, say, the BBC sites) I'd recommend KMPlayer instead as it's less pervasive and plays loads of formats.

Media Player Classic can do the job, find it here. Really easy to make an msi from aswell.

Our languages dept. always wants youtube videos and as usual they are blocked for normal access, so they send me the url and I use Mediaconvertor.org and change them into an .avi file and leave them in their user area. works a treat

I've tried conversion websites and the results are usually poor. To play flv's I use K-Lite Codec pack with Media Player Classic. However, Mediacoder is supposed to take YouTube URL's and convert them on the fly.

If you have any Linux workstations .flv files open with no problem with the built in Totem movie player (Ubuntu)

It should just work, there's something funky with your FLV file if VLC wont play it.

I am using VLC Player on OS X. Would this make a difference?

use a free program called youtube downloader, this allows you to download the clips to flv then open up flv files and convert them to a suitable video file. i do this and convert to wmv no problem. to find it type in "youtube downloader" in google and well pick from the results i suppose!

Or you could use a converter to convert the files to .mov or something. Best converter i have found is esuper, though the download link can be fairly tricky to find.

I downloaded this yesterday and found that this too would not play the file.

 

Quicktime just says that it is not a movie file.

 

I am coming closer to the conclusion that the file is fudged like Geoff said.

I am just trying this site. If it works well it could be useful even in school as we connect to You Tube through their server.

 

The only problem i have at the moment though is how long does it ususally take?

 

I have sat here waiting around 5 -10 minutes and still have a spinning cog with Connecting to server... Is this also downloading the vid as well as connecting or is it just not working?

 

I have tried with both firefox and safari and so far nothing.
