Where is this 100Gb install size coming from? I looked through the install directory on my PC and modern AAAs aren't going much above 60-70gb install size, with a lot managing to stay sub 50. For example destiny is just under 40, witcher 3 is only 35. Even Control and Outer Worlds were only in the 30-40 range.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part one install size for the PS4 is 73.7GB!!

I imagine that when it comes to xbox, the one X enhanced version will be another 10GB in improved textures, and I'd expect the PS5/XsX version to be touching 100GB easily.

master chief collection is iirc over 100gb

cod i think is (dont own it)

most arnt but as games get 4k textures the size goes up (iirc mcc is smaller on an xbox one s than my x)

MCC is a bit of a special case as it is a whole bunch of games in one. If i remember correctly you can actually only install the campaigns you want to play.

It's definitely huge on the one X thought. halo 2 remastered takes a lot of space!

Forza Motorsport 7 from 2017 was a 100GB+ game. I'm sure I've heard that the latest CoD game is like ~170GB. Games are getting up there, especially the AAA games that are focused on polished 4K HDR graphics.

Some of those aren’t that modern - things have ramped up hugely since and of course it depends on the type of game. Open world stuff, RPGs and cutting edge stuff like Cyberpunk 2077 are going to weigh in pretty heavily. A full RDR2 install comes in at 150GB or so.

I'd assume people would start writing games to be able to manage storage better, if it's running out then delete some levels you're not going to be playing soon

It’s textures, they can’t be compressed that much without taking a huge visual hit. ‘Levels’ aren’t usually a feature of these sorts of games either - so streaming in an 2GB texture pack could just slow things to a crawl.

Even if they did, though you’d keep fidelity you’d lose scale when they’re enlarged - so for instance a landscape would be crisp, but fairly barren. You can use a degree of procedural generation to compensate with things like foliage but it won’t hide it. Think of a rain-soaked street in something like GTA3 vs GTA5 (obviously other rendering features come into play too). Big grey expanses versus detailed and far more realistic.

The new console will have a dynamic download service. At the moment, when you download a game for the Xbox One, you get the same version that the Xbox One X, which has all the textures. However the new download service means that it will only download the assets for the type of console you are on instead of everything for all consoles. On top of that, the dynamic download service will also download the initial playable area of the game first. So say you're downloading Halo Infinite at launch, it'll download say the first hour of game play as a priority, including all assets, menus, etc. As you play, it'll continue to download the rest of the game in the background, reducing the requirement to wait for the download to complete before playing it at all.

I thought that was what Xbox One already did??!

There's certainly an element of this already.

After about 10% most games are "ready to launch". Not all go from the starts.

Pro Evo lets you play an exhibition match with the choice of just two teams for example.

Both Halo (now December) and Forza (now Feb 2021) have been put back due to Covid disruption.

They both look lovely though!

There is a chunk of launch titles announced here and there will be an abundance of previous-gen games that have been retextured to take advantage of the series X power.

erm halo is sometime next year (im betting they release it on halos anniversary in November)

forza i suspect is a series s/x only game which means in theory i cant be before November 2022 as they said for 2 years all games will work on current systems. what they showed of it they also waid was very early footage so 2 years seems reasonable. we might get a horizons though as its a different team

A point worth noting for anyone considering the series S is that it has less ram than the current Xbox one X so won't be able to run current gen games in one X 4k mode.

Kind of disappointing that in some ways a "next gen" machine is actually less potent than the current gen!
