Cleaning inside pc's - duster/hoover??

Hi folks

 

Just wondering what people use to clean the insides of their pc's. We've been given the unenviable task of cleaning out the insides of over 300 pcs to try and help them last a bit longer, and as you can imagine nowadays because of budgets, we're looking for the cheapest solution.

 

So, what do people use? Just a duster, or a specific pc hoover. In the past we've used cans of air but because of the numbers of pcs you can imagine how many cans of that we'll use.

 

I was thinking as the cheapest option to get an airbed pump to blow out the dust and just have a general hoover 'near' to suck up the dust. The pc's in our DT dept are particularly clogged shall we say!..

Pick a windy day and put them all out in the carpark with the sides off?

 

If you decide to hoover them, just make sure they're still plugged in (Don't need to be switched on at all though) so the case is at least grounded.

Highly recommend disposable face masks too... as annual computer cleaning certainly creates storm clouds!

This one is a beast! You need to ensure you are holding on to the hose/nozzle if you put it on the the higher setting else it waves around frantically like a firemans hose!!!

We've got one of CompuCleaner Xperts and it works great for us. It's just a case of finding a power-point close enough to an outside door, because I'm not blowing out PCs inside (the cleaners would kill me).

 

At my last place (and to use at home) I picked up a ball pump and that works pretty well if you're only doing a couple at a time.

Another +1 for this. I've got one here and it does a great job on projector filters etc.

 

Also +1 for the comments on dust masks. I always end up with a cold after cleaning lots of projector filters if I don't use a mask, so can only imagine what it'd be like after 300 PCs

 

We've got one of CompuCleaner Xperts and it works great for us. It's just a case of finding a power-point close enough to an outside door, because I'm not blowing out PCs inside (the cleaners would kill me).

 

We've got an outdoor power point on the playground that I always use for this if I can. It's more pleasant doing the job in the open air too!

Many thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions. Now to see if the management will foot the bill for a decent one, as like some of you say, it's a lot of pc's to clean.

Good idea re the face masks. Got myself a few PP3 masks at home so shall be using one of those, and weather depending, I think I'll do it outside!

These are pretty good but can get overheated so something to keep an eye on. I normally take the computers outside and do it.

For that volume of computers, you might have to look at something more industrial!.

 

+1 for portability just remember to brush lightly/clean the filter on the bottom once in a while to keep it working at full power!

Borrow a vac from estates and use a couple of clean paint brushes. One of the things I have always kept on top of as the computers are always more reliable when clean.

I find an apprentice or the work experience students normally are good for this sort of thing.

The "preventative maintenance" I was taught - I've yet to see a company, school, organisation etc actually do it.
