I've lost count of how many times the laptop trolley was left unlocked, door closed but unlocked and even - left unlocked, with the key left in the lock!

True but if they were going missing you would think someone (SLT, ICT Co-ord) would ensure it was locked after the first few went missing.

I used to think that too - but have you never worked in a school before? It's not a problem until it affects their lesson, THEN it's a high priority! Somehow it's very technical locking a trolley!

Koldov Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 (edited) Have just been round the school to check our 4 trolleys.... 1 ok, locked with all iPads. 1 unlocked with an iPad sitting on the top! 2 each missing an iPad - a quick walk through the rooms and found them sitting on teacher's desks... Edit: I do this walk everyday (EVERYDAY) as it is my job to ensure they are all in at the end of the school day, not sure why the teachers don't grasp it - they've all been told multiple times... If they attempt to wipe them they simply comeback online as “Property of xxxxxx” Once had an iPhone stolen in Croatia, for months we kept resetting and wiping it. Eventually we got an email from it’s new owner begging us to unlock it and let them keep it! We refused to comply and instead arranged to have it collected by UPS. If managed correctly these things can certainly have a zero resale value if stolen. Unfortunately there’s still a good market for them if broken for spares. 1

In one case the teacher noticed that 'her' laptop had disappeared overnight (it was left on her desk - not locked up as required by policy) it was found in the cleaners cupboard behind a bucket of cleaning solvent - which only 1 cleaner had access to second school had complaints of money phones etc etc going missing from the staff room - a ventilation thing on the wall was replace with one with a secret camera that only the IT manager and the Head knew about - the cleaner was seen stealing 'stuff' the next day several months later I discovered the IP camera while sitting in the IT tech room with no work to do (I was new - manager was unsure of trusting an ex teacher - go figure) so I was snooping on the network and found an ipcamera - IT manager started thinking he had a real IT tech and explained what it was and why He ended up calling me a "Weird Hybrid" - best compliment he could ever have given me (you have to know him!!!!) anyway - Yup - cleaners are badly paid and some will steal stuff due to desperation - which is WHY portable stuff needs to be locked up also - at one time I had a classroom with 2 trolleys of laptops - which I was responsible for locking up every day. But the trolleys were visible to any kids on their way out of school and one day someone (to be clear - adults - may or may not be linked to kids in the school but lotsof kids in the school were from dodgy families) smashed their way through the externals doors - entered the school - smashed down the door to my classroom (would have taken a year 7 2 minutes) broke the padlocks and stole most of the laptops by putting them in Morrisions bags which broke so the police followed a trail of dropped laptops across the car park and then recovered a few more from pawn brokers over the next few days I think we lost 2 amazingly none of the laptops dropped on the car park were broken in any way OK - end of story - not sure it was on topic - but...... 2

How is that a generalisation? some cleaners steal things, some teachers steal things, some *profession* steal things... If he was saying all cleaners are thieves, then yeah, be offended, but he wasn't. 2
