maxrebo Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I`m looking to sell my Kia on Auto trader soon, this is the first time I`ve sold a car privately. Has any one any tips on selling on AT? Would you recommend listing at a higher price than you would be happy to sell for?

hardtailstar Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 My advice would be... - Wash and clean inside of car - fill up engine liquid levels - Lots of photos including of any damage and be honest about it - Lots of info in the description - Don't worry if a buyer comes with a mechanic friend to check it over. - Add a couple of hundred to the price you want so if any negotiations you'll still get what you want. Don't let them take it until there are cleared funds in your bank account. Cash can work although I find nowadays electronic transfer gets there in a few minutes. Cheques are a no unless they're prepared to wait 5 days.

Advertising the car over the value won't help. Look at values on Parkers. Have you tried Gumtree? I sold my car on there. Be aware, which ever platform you use expect phonecalls at any time of the day!

To elaborate on this, this doesn't mean the third party cover provided by most insurance policies for over 25s! If their policy covers them for use of other vehicles, it will likely only be third party, which means if they crash it and kill someone, their insurance will cover the dead person but not the repair/replacement of your car! Don't let anyone test drive your car unless they can prove they have fully comprehensive cover on it. Cuvva is brilliant for this, one hour fully comp insurance only costs a few quid on most cars.

Make sure to reply with the asking price - these people will mess you around something chronic if they think you're desperate to sell. Think no shows, even further haggling, hassle if it goes wrong, etc etc. 1

Once sold is it a case of that`s it, sold as seen? or do people have any rights to get their money back?
3s-gtech Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 No, and especially if you make it clear in the advert that the vehicle is sold without any warranty either given or implied. If it dies on their way home you can be in an awkward position (though still technically, you're not liable), but three months later if the clutch pops it's tough.
