Stress test for Laptop

Hi all,

 

I have a staff member with a laptop that she says is just turning itself off. I am going to have a look but wanted to know if anyone could recommend a stress test software so that I can put the laptop through its paces?

 

This staff member is always complaining about her laptops the one she has worked for a former member of staff without issue (I checked), so want to put it too bed with a proper workout.

Prime95 torture test gives machines a pretty good workout of the CPU, cooling and RAM, and therefore by extension the Motherboard.

I've had something similar happen quite recently...

 

New teacher and I didn't quite hit it off (partly because she came in as Year Leader and demanded x, y and z - yet could never remember to turn her projector off when she wasn't using it...), anyway she's quite full of herself and so I didn't exactly give her the newest laptop I could.

 

I thought she might be angling for a newer one as she constantly complained of her laptop freezing (and made quite a fuss about it, all the way up the SLT to the Head)...

 

Anyway, I swapped out her laptop with the same model and she's been quiet since.

 

As for her old laptop, I ran Aida 64 (which has a stress test function) for hours and.... nothing... Couldn't get it to freeze.

 

So I'm thinking rather than hardware it may be software/application/network issues.

 

Honestly I didn't really talk to her much about what she was doing when it happens (as getting details from a user is normally like pulling teeth), but there are so many variables and she was making such a fuss, it was easier for me to just swap the laptop out. Once you've ruled out hardware, it's a lot of effort to go through all the possible scenarios in Windows and the various apps. I'm sure you've ruled out any power saving/hibernate/suspend options/battery life etc.

 

Other stress testers I've used in the past are things like Prime, Memtest, and Sandra.

Is the laptop connected to a Smart board, by any chance? I've had a few computers over the years that work fine until they are connected to a Smart board, then they start rebooting or suddenly powering off completely. Firmware upgrades to the board seem to fix the problem.

Prime95 is the one I use personally and I tend to do that with any machine I redeploy just to make sure there aren't any issues. Also, depending on what it's being used for, also run 3dMark.

 

In regards to the laptop, I have seen it if the squishy thing between the chair and keyboard is incapable of properly plugging a power adaptor in fully.

Brilliant, that's the criteria I always used for issuing laptops!
