Door Entry - MiFare Cards - Overview Needed

Morning all.

 

I'm after a bit of info before I start reaching out to various companies, but just need a bit of a primer to get me going and understand how other peeps are doing this.

 

We've just implement RFID Cards for all our Sixth Formers and Staff for use on the MFD Devices around the school using PaperCut. No ID cards means no printing - so this is encouraging Staff and Students to have their ID cards on at all times and that's working. Students self register their cards on a MFD device using their AD credentials and the card gets stored in PaperCut (You can sync from AD to PaperCut, but not from PaperCut to AD without creating some sort of script but I'll worry about that later).

 

Of course, I'm now looking to extend this to door entry, so looking at a solution of how we can use these same cards on door entry with a system that can be centrally managed. Ideally tie things into AD, so we if look their account in AD they loose access to the building (a bit extreme this one, but you get the idea)

 

So, what do you do, what do you use (recommendations) and how'd you do it using the MiFare cards that we have in place?

We use NRS SmartID.

 

Print the card, it puts ID into Paxton and AD.

 

Papercut currently syncs from AD but we're switching so it points at SmartID shortly.

We use Salto, which can, I believe, sync with AD. We don't do that because the LA didn't spring for that module when they spec'd the system for our new build. Tempted to order it myself though as it'd save a lot of time.

My vote would go for Paxton and their Net2 access control system. We use it for attendance and access control for all staff and Post 16 students. We use the fobs, but I know that the cards work just as well. With a card printer you can make your own fully fledged ID cards (we don't).

 

Paxton has great features such as anti pass back, so students can't fob in or out for each other. It also has a great extra feature for auto printing during fire alarm, which prints out as soon as the alarm goes off (using an input from the fire system).

 

The system is not used for time/attendance checking for staff, as this may have caused a problem with the Unions at introduction. For staff is is simply for recording who is on site & access. We do use reports for the Post 16 lot however, especially if still signed in on site when the fire alarm goes off.

Paxton and Net2 all the way for door access.

We use Salto as well. Excellent system. Easy to use.

As yet not AD integrated apart from “operators” not all people with cards can be synced with AD.

We use Paxton and their Net2 access control system. They register their cards on photocopier (Papercut). I have a powershell script to take card numbers from papercut and write to AD. Third party application Net2ADSync takes number from AD and writes it to Net2. Therefore if you disable user account in AD their door access is removed in Net2 by the Net2ADSync application. We use net2 Paxton doors but their wireless battery powered locks are pretty unreliable but their hard wired Maglock are fine. If you do get the wireless locks get one with key override or you will be drilling doors to get in.

The majority of people we interact with use Net2 (which is HiTag2 tech) or mifare. As long as your card can be read by a door entry system / catering / papercut you will be fine, they don't even need to read the same number as more than likely the door entry reader will read a more secure sector in the card rather than a serial number.

This is good info as we have done the same thing with papercut and mifare cards and I am looking at extending card use to door access and hearing lots of stories about how expensive it is (budgets are BAAAD here). A school down the road told me Paxton was very expensive. Can anyone confirm? PM if needed.

Can’t comment on Paxton but Salto battery locks are £280 plus vat
