MrWu Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Hi My graphics department is trying to convince management to upgrade from CS6 to creative cloud. We have site licence but creative cloud allows use at home. It’s a huge expense .. what do you guys think? Other than having more up to date features for students and usage at home I’m struggling to come up with a sure fire justification? Thanks as always
3s-gtech Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 I can't really give that much perspective as I haven't used CC, but as CS6 works beautifully with W10, and still has features that 99% of our users don't get to a level to need, I'd say it'd take a lot of justifying. As well as the awe-inspiring ongoing cost, there's also your time to consider in maintaining updates etc, where CS6 is now static in that regard. 1
free780 Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Yes very expensive. Had 2017 CC packages rolled out last year. Getting 2018 products ready. Looks like serial licensing for CC will be retired with the 2019 release. I think Adobe will require a device sync for shared devices. Until you hit a compatability/security issue maybe stick with CS6. You could argue that vulnerabilities in CC can be reverse engineered into CS6. You can keep CC up to date with AUSST.
Meldrew Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 We have a 500 computer licence for CS6, but have purchased an Adobe CC licence for photography. The older version of Photoshop didn't support newer cameras using camera RAW (or something - I'm no expert), but that was the only reason we purchased Adobe CC. Meldrew
dhicks Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 We have site licence but creative cloud allows use at home. Serif's Affinity software instead? They always used to provide pretty reasonable home-licensing options, and their site license is rather more affordable than Adobe's.
psydii Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 While photoshop alternatives have come a long way since The GIMP, they are still not widely used in industry and so of questionable value/interest to those with/needing skills outside the education realm. I’ve always found photoshop helps retain the best staff, and gets the best results for the students. This line of analysis does usually require a head / business manager to be prepared to manage staffing in order to fund teaching resources/ or retain other key staff.
fiza Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 We use CS5 and have the same dilemma. Do we stick with CS5 as we have paid for it or dish out over £2000 per year for 100 seat licence. Cannot afford that let alone a full site licence to cover every pc/laptop in school.
free780 Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 I think it hits the wider question of. Are we preparing students for the real working world? If the necessary budgets are not in place are we really preparing students for the real world? 1
TechMonkey Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 I think it hits the wider question of. Are we preparing students for the real working world? If the necessary budgets are not in place are we really preparing students for the real world? It's the age old issue of skills or software. Should we be teaching Microsoft Office or Word processing, spreadsheets and presentations? Should we teach Photoshop or photo editing skills? Or, to show my age, should we teach Dreamweaver or web programming? At what level do we need to be constraining students to software? Should we teach the basics and let Universities specialise or do they want Colleges to prepare them to use Photoshop, or do the Colleges want Secondary schools to prepare them, or should Primaries be preparing them. Sorry, slightly heading off track 1
kennysarmy Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 In the summer I emailed Adobe for a quote as we only have 250 licences for CS6 and going forward 300 CC licences might suit us best: This was the quote: Product- All Apps Device License Single Device License- £ 21.12/ year 300 Device Licenses- £ 6336/ year Not exactly encouraging schools to use their software! This apparently was an "offer" price that I had to take up before Aug 31st 2018 I asked what the price would be for subsequent years if there was no "offer" and was told they had no idea, but if there was no "offer" the cost would revert to: £75,888! (GBP 252.96/ yr per seat!)
psydii Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Adobe licensing shenanigans gives me grey hairs. There is usually a deal to be had if you push hard enough/take it up to the line.
free780 Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 It's probably because in business you buy per user per month/year. But because in education we have so many shared devices and not 1:1. This seems to be the general trend to move to a per user 1:1 model.
Sonic007 Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Massive outlay of money. We stayed with CS6.
synaesthesia Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Pricing in recent years has dropped so these days it is far more affordable. Not cheap, but "affordable". As for should you upgrade, probably. The down side is it doesn't belong to you anymore and are forced to pay subscription fees. "Affordable" for Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Richard Branson. "A waste of school resources" for anyone in education outside of art colleges as it provides zero end benefit to T&L. 1
Sonic007 Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 With Photoshop (in my opinion) you don't need the latest version. Its all down to creativity and what you can come up with. 1
Norphy Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 where CS6 is now static in that regard. Which is a double edge sword as we all know how good Adobe is at security.
3s-gtech Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Agreed on that, but it does mean that it's just in-line with many other outdated packages we run in schools (but with a bigger attack surface area). The Flash part of the package is the biggest issue; that's pretty much redundant now and can be pulled out of deployments.
Norphy Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 FWIW we're still pushing CS6 out as well. I'm waiting for a new Windows 10 update to brick it before we update. I suspect it's a matter of time.
3s-gtech Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 As it's an essentially well-written and heavily patched suite of 32 bit/64 bit software, I genuinely expect it to keep working for a long time yet. Along with CS4, CS5 and CS5.5 by all accounts. Hell - if the legacy SIMS modules can work...
kennysarmy Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 We only have a licence for 250 installs of CS6....does anyone know if it's possible to buy additional ones now?
3s-gtech Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 We only have a licence for 250 installs of CS6....does anyone know if it's possible to buy additional ones now? We topped up our license in 2014, and that was cutting it fine to the final cutoff. Five years later - no.
bossman Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Well we have a 500 user license for CCE All Apps for K-12 - 2 GB.... SSO through our Gsuite app.... Local installation on clients for some of the applications but being trialled in Canada atm on Google Chromebooks....to be entirely web based... Didn't cost very much at all through Softcat our software licensing re-seller.... But now with the likes of https://www.photopea.com/and other online applications similar to what Adobe provide I can see Adobe dropping their licensing fees dramatically.... Could be wrong... PM me if you want to know how much we paid?....

That's why I'm cynical about it having much of a long term future. 1
free780 Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 (edited) I've had to work on Adobe User Sync since the summer to support the 2019 products. Adobe software is never designed to be behind proxies or used on shared PCs. It all seems to be heading to 1:1 subscription. Edited February 1, 2019 by free780
