How do you issue yours...

 

We have issued our own certificate for our exchange server for webaccess, however in IE7 it informs you that it may not be safe and basically adds another step into getting onto the site,

 

At the embc migration meeting i mentioned this, and was told synetrix should be able to supply us with a trusted SSL certificate, has anybody done this?

You could try here StartCom Free SSL Certification Authority I wanted to do this at my place but we go through the LEA and they don't or won't bother to implement it.

You need to buy a certificate that is 'trusted' via a company such as thwate or verisign if you have money to burn, or somewhere else for a bit cheaper. If your school or LEA has an agreement with synetrix then ask them for one.

For exchange I use trusticos rapidssl certs. Trusted in ie6,7 and firefox 2

 

Not bad at 9 quid a year + vat

Nor me. But what about our .org domain that has some pretty funky DNS going on - free too if we can prove we're a school?

(on the dns thing, we have a .org doman hosted by a third party, who's A record is forwarded to another company who do our website, we have a few sub domains that that we deal with ourselves (host and ssl) and OWA on a sub domain of our .org that forwards to our internal Exchange server that is actualy on a .sch domain (also with an external IP address). Still with me?

 

I need a certificate that will stop the 'This site is not trusted' messages but can't get my head around what I actual need to put in the certificate setup page. Any help welcome).

Wildcard certs are not free, but single server certs are free for 'education'.

What about if we have a .co.uk domain but we are still a school. Do you think we would still qualify?

I asked EMBC and they said we're better off getting our own, i'm not sure if that means that they don't offer them or were just feeling lazy.

how can i make http://mydomain.com go straight to https://mydomain.com with IIS rather than just go the HTTP Error 403.4 - Forbidden: SSL is required to view this resource page ?

Just had a prod to respond to this ... (some of us are trying to take a break you know and concentrate on the day job!)

 

I'll ask this question at the next meeting with them as JANET do have a certificate authority that schools can use, as long as the RBC is the owner of the domain ... within EMBC this should mean the tag holder and nominated technical / administrative contact (which they are for most of the .sch.uk domains that were migrated earlier in the year).
