Guys can you help??

 

I have brought some (4) RJ45 data splitters. They are small boxes with 3 RJ45 ports on them. The idea is that i can turn 1 socket outlet into 2.

 

I've used similar to these in the past with no problems. The only thing is i cant get these new ones to work.. I've tried patch cables and crossover cables and still can't get any of them to work.

 

Anyone have an idea?

 

I'll attach a pic so you get a better idea of what i mean.

Just figured out that they don't work on gig ethernet and all my switches are gigabit...

 

Ok.. so now i have to find another way around my problem...

 

I need to turn 1 outlet into 2. I cant use a switch because there are no spare power outlets near by.

 

Does anyone have any ideas?

Just wondered, have you tried directly plugging the splitter into a switch or have you just tried outlets?

Do you have to put one at each end of the connection? We've got similar ones and they only work in pairs. Edited by tech_guy

If you only use 1 (IE, turn 1 port into 2) you end up with a passive hub in that whichever machine is used first gets the connection.

 

If you use them in pairs like you're supposed to, it effectively splits the pairs on both sides allowing two connections along 1 cable. (Cat5E will give you two instances of 100mbit, but I doubt you'll get 2x1Gbit unless you use Cat6)

I don't think 1Gb is at all possible with splitters as it uses all 4 pairs? I have made splitters myself with some spare cat5 cable and rj45 endings.. much cheaper than buying them in! We did have some problems though when using them for printers and workstations on the same one (the data seemed to spill over from the workstation onto the printer connection, so the printer printed endless sheets of garbage untl there was no paper left).

 

As mentioned before, to make full use of this method, you will need one at each end, so each of the pairs (orange/green and blue/brown) are plugged into their own port in the switch end, hence 2 separate connections. Bear in mind 100mb uses lines 1,2,3 and 6, so providing you have these same ones covered by the brown and blue pairs, it should "work".

I'm using something similar to them with a D-Link DGS 1224T Switch and have no problems. Sounds stupid but are they definately matching pairs. We have ones that area for two computers and some for a computer and a phone. The internal division of the wiring in the splitter is different.

Agreed, these must be used in pairs as they are passive devices that effectively split a single 4 pair cable into two two pair cables. One at each end and you should be fine. I have used these before and personally find them to be far more trouble than they are worth as they clutter up the switching cabinet and are prone to coming loose far more often than the same setup without them but it is cheaper than rewiring properly.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to put a little switch where you want 2 connections?

 

Depends if you have spare power sockets, and reckon it won't randomly be turned off. I use splitters in 2 places in school as there are limited power sockets, and staff would turn things off...

Ahh, you're switches may be gigabit but are the endpoint(s) in the room where you need the splitters connecting at gigabit or at 100meg. If it's at 100meg then you're switches will autonegotiate and the link will have those unused pairs you need.

 

fwiw i agree with synack splitter are messy, even with one or two they can make a mess of you're switch cabinet - or should i say even more of a mess.

 

A few years back 3com used to sell a shiny silver single gang in-wall 5 or 6 port unmanaged switch with either a 100meg or 1gbps uplink.

How cool is that. From what i recall it needed local power, and it was a bit pricier than data spitter. See if it's still being sold.

 

Here we go the 3com intellijack series.....have a read on the PoE options, and it appears some of the models are 2 gang rather than 1.

Here's the one i'd recommend and at 50 quid it's considerable more elegant than a splitter and a LOT and easier than puling more ethernet cable to the room back to you're cab.

Sorry, I'm probably being completely dense but I can see the reason for having to use the things in pairs but I can't work out where the pairs would go. If I have a single network port and I want to connect two computers to it, then I stick a splitter in the port and connect the two computers to the splitter. Where does the other splitter go?

On the network driver, can you not specify the network card operates at 100Mbps, which should then force the switch also to operate at 100Mbps.

 

Your alternative could be to go wireless I suppose and put an access point on the end, or of course another switch, as already suggested.

One goes at each end of the cable so one say in the classroom and the other in the patch panel

So you have buy two splitters then?

I've just discovered that one of my network sockets has died a death, cover taken off - no obvious damage, changed cables etc etc so was going to buy a splitter and run two pc's from it. My only other plan was to move the wireless access point and use the ports on that but that may mean leaving an area of school without decent wireless cover.

Correct, one at each end, and the reason for that is one uses 2 pairs of cable and the other port uses the other 2 pairs but the splitter then ensures they are presented on the right pins for the switches to allow them and the pc to communicate etc... only put one in and you got a mess!!!

 

Yes you could put that on the end of your working port and give you 4 more ports to have in that location
