How does your school do it ?

Social media ? Local news ? Internal messaging system ? Word of mouth ?

If it's an internal messaging system how do you use it if the staff who have the knowledge to use it can't get into school ?

Kent operates a school closures notification service which independent and state schools both use.

Parents can elect to be notified by email and/or text. Local radio uses this for its announcements.

We also put it on the school website, the school twitter feed and send out a parentmail.

Staff <-> Staff notifications: Head to all staff by E-Mail, backed up by phone tree starting with the Head to senior staff, senior staff to others, then cascaded onward.

Staff -> Parents/Students: Parent mail, and website notification.

Website, Twitter and the local radio stations online service. We had a WhatsApp group chat at 6am to decide if the school would open on Thursday, Friday was a no brainier and I had the authorising email from the HM by 4pm Thursday to update all the channels.

Could you also put a message on your phones? So when a parent calls to check they hear the message and hangup (or thats the theory).

Every means possible. Primary is schoolcomms/myed app, with announcements on Facebook (which is probably the most effective method), our website and our county council operate a closure service website too which is also relayed to local radio.

Yeah we go to town with it

Schoolcomms - Text messages to all parents and staff (Watch you have enough credits in the bank for this)

Email - All students/Staff

Website - Front page alert

Facebook/twitter/Instagram - It's rather telling how social media has changed over the years, i.e last time we had a snow day (8+ years) The students mostly found out via twitter & all retweeted it. Now they barely use twitter, Facebook was mostly parents & the kids mainly found out via Instagram.

We've had three days off this week so I've got pretty efficient at doing it :p

Schoolcomms message to all parents plus website here too. Reason for post is to mention that it's worth checking default settings: we usually set SMS or App, so if the parents do have the App it saves us text credits. I checked the delivery status of the messages and found that a good percentage of the messages sent to the App had been delivered but not read. We now send urgent messages via SMS only.

Yeah we go to town too: MyEd App/SMS to all parents and staff, email, website, twitter and every social media thing we use, phone message, local radio etc...

However, on Friday we still had a few staff and pupils turn up!
