DalekSec Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 After a NAS for home, Here are the requirements i'm after: - 4 Bay at least (For future expanding) - At least 1 NIC - Want at least 8TB of storage (After setting up RAID, thinking Raid 5), was thinking 3tb x4 but can work around different configs! - Not used Plex before but being able to use it will be a plus (Unsure how it works, if needs a capability or just works off a file share) To be used for: - Time Machine backups - My video editing storage and backups - Plex server for films etc - General backups Obviously want as cheap as possible! on amazon this config was around £650, hoping for under £500! second hand enclosers could be ok, not HDDs. Any suggestions?

leegcvcc Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 I'd recommend QNAP TS-431. Bought 2 of them for work recently. So impressed with all the apps and features. It's a network in a box! If i was buying for home, i'd get one of these Spent ages looking at NAS's and these were my pick.
gsk Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 If plex is a real consideration I think you'll regret not spending the extra few hundred pounds and getting something with some processing horsepower. Likewise if you are going to have a play with VPNs, Cloud Sync, CCTV and some of the other cool things they can do then I think you'll quickly hit the limit of the processing power. I certainly did with my first Synology DS215j. I've since upgraded to this https://www.amazon.co.uk/QNAP-TS-453A-8G-Bay-NAS-Enclosure/dp/B017UKCIZM/ and have been really pleased with it. It will transcode video on the fly while recording CCTV and act as a CloudBerry target for hybrid backups as well as seperately doing Time Machine Backups.

spadam Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Synology. I bought a DS414 4ish years ago and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. The UI is awesome. Really simple and intuitive to set up and manage and loads of extra features if you want to use them or just have a play around.

Haven't had an issue with it, was easy to set up for home use. 1

FreeNAS is good to tinker with if you have kit already and want to use more NAS features.
