Sorry for jumping in.... My son wants a vr setup for Christmas (as do I). Quick question, do all PC VR games work on any vr systems like Vive or Oculus

It's a pick-and-mix unfortunately.

  • Games sold via HTC's VivePort are definitely Vive compatible, obviously, and might support Rifts.
  • Games from the Oculus Store, the answer is 'well, yes, but actually no'. They will work with a Rift, broadly speaking, but you need a lot of fangling about to get them to work. Oculus has no native Vive support. It's owned by facebook. Try not to be surprised when they do facebook things. This has been made easier thanks to ReVive but as it's free and third-party, support for newer games might take a while or the project may eventually end up dead.
  • If buying via Steam or some other unaffiliated storefront, general answer is 'yes, they're cross-compatible' as devs want to maximise their potential profit and playerbase. But since they have different controllers, a game may be suited better to one than the other.

Caveat emptor, unfortunately. Do your research and don't just assume.

Seems a bit odd punting Half Life as the next VR title?

Another piece of interesting VR news is that Oculus released the link feature beta today which allows you to connect the standalone Oculus Quest to a PC via cable which in effect basically lets you use it as an Oculus Rift. It'll be interesting to see how well this works since it's basically "streaming" over USB rather than using it as a video connection.

I've just ordered a USB C to USB 3.0 cable to try this with my Quest, hopefully it'll arrive later today and I'll get a chance to try it out. I'll share my thoughts when I've given it a go. :D

I tried it briefly last night and it seems to work really well. In fact first impressions are that I'd struggle to tell the difference between it and an actual wired headset. I did only play for around 5 minutes though as my only USB A to C cable is a metre long so it's a bit awkward. My graphics card isn't on the currently supported list either so I wasn't sure if it would work at all. Seems fine though.

I've ordered a longer cable so I'll test it more thoroughly when it arrives.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes, then.

I've used RiftCat in the past to connect to my PC, but I couldn't get the resolution and sharpness quite right. Did you try any of those 3rd party things before and if so, how does it compare?

No, I never actually got round to trying the WiFi streaming apps unfortunately. I was going to but when I heard about the official Oculus link being released I thought I'd wait for it.

Facebook Will Now Use Oculus VR Data for Ads Just as Everyone Expected

Well, here it is. When Facebook bought Oculus, it assured users that it wouldn’t be using any data gathered via Oculus VR for advertising. It’s a question that’s come up again and again over the years, and it’s always been answered the same way: Oculus and Facebook do not and will not combine data…

Except, now, they do. Oculus has announced changes to its privacy policy regarding how data is shared between Oculus and Facebook when you connect an Oculus Rift to your FB account. You are not required to connect your Oculus account to Facebook in order to use your Rift. Oculus’ FAQ claims that one reason for the tighter integration between the two companies is that Facebook wants to create more social experiences in VR, and the company is launching a new social platform for VR gamers to connect on Facebook. That’s not a terrible idea given that VR suffers from a limited player base, but it’s not an option I’d choose, personally. I’m more a fan of single-player games in the first place.

As far as what data the company is going to collect and use, here’s the official statement:

Facebook will now use information about your Oculus activity, like which apps you use, to help provide these new social features and more relevant content, including ads. Those recommendations could include Oculus Events you might like to attend or ads for VR apps available on the Oculus Store. These changes won’t affect third-party apps and games, and they won’t affect your on-device data.

If you choose not to log into Facebook on Oculus, we won’t share data with Facebook to allow third parties to target advertisements to you based on your use of the Oculus Platform.

Got the rift s for Christmas, blown my mind. It's much better than I thought, now need to buy lots of games.

I've been playing some of the Oculus first party VR PC games recently. Asgards Wrath and Lone Echo/Echo Arena are really good. Robo Recall is also worth a shot.

Superhot VR is still amazing despite being a few years old now and a port of a non-VR game.

Pistol Whip is probably my current goto game right now though when I have 15 minutes free.

Also, don't forget Rec Room which is free and has loads of fun game modes like the PUBG inspired Rec Royale.

Elite Dangerous works pretty well in VR if you're looking for a space sim game.

Has anyone else played 'Walking Dead - Saints & Sinners'?

What a great game to showcase the VR to friends.

Linky?

I'm going to try it when I get home tonight.

The one thing that needs to be worked on in all vr games is moving around. Would be great if you could get some kind of 360 treadmill, so I could actually walk around the game but not my room.

The thumb-stick movement makes me a bit giddy and the point and zoom movement only works for some types of games.
