randle Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 In a break from the norm I've also heard that you need to have SP1 installed as a minimum. Usually SP's contain all previous SP updates. I take it the SP1 pre-requisite is due to keeping the file size down!!?
Zoom7000 Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Well it's April 21st so i suppose we need to wait untill 9AM in Redmond when they pull the switch :-) Indeed does look like this is the case! Still no SP3 on Technet as of 10:38 (BST)
Guest theeldergeek Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Any news on when SP3 (Final Version) can be downloaded? They orginally spoke of it being avaiable around the same time as Vista SP1 which that was last month sometime! You can get it now..... there's a registry hack or summin which makes Windows Updates think you are a Beta tester. I've got it on my XPS laptop, and i've not noticed any difference to be honest. The only thing i'm miffed with is that StyleXP won't work bah!
cookie_monster Posted April 21, 2008 Author Posted April 21, 2008 Does that just give you the RC version though?
Arthur Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 (edited) Does that just give you the RC version though? Unfortunately yes. The final RTM version will be available via Windows Update on 29/04/2008. Edited April 21, 2008 by Arthur 1
cookie_monster Posted April 22, 2008 Author Posted April 22, 2008 You should be able to download it manually though shouldn't you.
Dos_Box Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 It was supposed to be in the TechNet subscribers download area yesterday. It's still not there. *Grrrrrr*
cookie_monster Posted April 22, 2008 Author Posted April 22, 2008 Oh. "MSDN/Technet - Not yet. This will be available within the next month. " Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing - TechNet Forums
Michael Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 It's on bittorrent though! I'd be careful though, you'll get some idiot who'll upload a package full of all kinds of nasties! I'd rather wait and download from microsoft.com
ICT_GUY Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 So its coming out the same day as GTA IV, I can see this causing problems.
Michael Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 I have pre-ordered GTA IV for my PS3. It looks like it could be THE game of 2008. As for choosing between XP SP3 and GTA, it's got to be GTA all the way I doubt very much I'll get GTA IV on the 29th April from Amazon, so XP SP3 will fill the gap

Zoom7000 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Just saw this updated Timeframe on Neowin: * RTM (release to manufacturing) Apr - 21st * OEM Channel Apr - 21st * Windows Update Apr - 29th * Download Centre Apr - 29th * MSDN/Technet Download May - 2nd * Windows XP SP3 Fulfillment Media May - 19th * VL Customers via download Jun - 1st * Automatic Updates Jun - 10th So, basically, IT Professionals who pay Microsoft good money for early access to products are screwed over. It's a bit stupid that the Professionals who help to test the product don't receive the download before it is released to the General Public anyway!
CyberNerd Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 So, basically, IT Professionals who pay Microsoft good money for early access to products are screwed over. Not really, its only a few days. IT professionals are going to wait for a few months to deploy a major service pack anyway. I'm certainly going to wait for others to rush into it, and document their mistakes. We'll probably have this tested and ready for sept.
Zoom7000 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Well, I've been testing the beta for a while now and will be deploying SP3 as soon as it comes out. Some of our machines are long overdue certain updates. As for the wait, we'll the fact that Technet/MSDN subscribers have to wait a few days is bad enough. Subscribers pay a lot of money for the privalidge and quite frankly, I don't see the point at the moment when it is released to the general public beforehand anyway!
cookie_monster Posted April 22, 2008 Author Posted April 22, 2008 Some of our machines are long overdue certain updates. Do you not use WSUS?
Zoom7000 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Not at the moment, we were using SUS, then rebuilt the server, and I haven't had the chance to install WSUS.
Netman Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 (edited) *Original link changed.... Deposit Files if anyone wants a copy... I have virus checked it and installed it on a client with no problems, but as always, download and run at your own risk etc. etc. blah blah... ...enjoy.... Edited April 23, 2008 by Netman 1
ZeroHour Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Where did you get it from netman? Downloading @ roughly 900-1mb a sec
