We are looking into eepc’s. Some one a while back was saying they had trial of this product. If this was you please can you tell me how you went about it please?

Thank you

I've just noticed we have about 6000 tesco computers for school vouchers and you can get one from them for about that.

As strawberry has said im not sure how likely you are going to be able to get one on trial as I think they are flying out as soon as they are in stock.

An 8GB HD 1gig RAM Windows version is due out in May as well as a 4GB HD 512MB RAM standard version - so you may be able to get your name down for a trial for one of these newer models.

I have 2 here.

I've installed XP here, and they work great.

On the 4gb h/d I've also installed Google earth, office 2003 and SIMS.

No real problems to report.

(p.s. One is in South Africa at the moment, and working flawlessly)

We too have two, both running the standard o/s. A pupil with a broken arm is using one with no problems and the other is my hack m/c, which did have Fedora on it but now is back to standard in case we get another broken arm. Feedback has been excellent - they just work.

The final paragraph of this story http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/0,1000000091,39373621,00.htm explains why they are so rare. It also mentions touch screen is a possibility, just like the many hacked ones available on ebay.

we all got one each here... very shiny. I like the default O/S.

Highly recommended...

I'd personally wait for the 9" screens though!

We've got two - I've installed XP Pro on both. Kids love them but find it tiring to use one for a long period due to the small screen and keyboard.

Great for email and surfing.

I bought one for myself after seeing them at BETT but my daughter now has it permanently and uses it at school :-(

How do they run with XP please?
Very well I found. I installed an nlited version with all the windows updates integrated and used under a gigabyte of the 4GB ssd.

It just needs that extra resolution and it will be perfect, bring on the 8.9" version.

Would you recommend putting them onto the Domain?

Many Thanks

I didn't try putting the one we had on the domain, but I can't see any problems with doing so. As long as you don't try putting something like CC3 on it ;)

 We have a fair few... I know there's at least 6 hanging around in student hands.. might be nearer 12...

Most of the one's we've given students haven't been seen near our hands yet except when we migrated from our own proxy to using the SWGfL for wireless devices.

We've got one hooked up on XP, it's got no space left on it... can't remember what is/isn't installed on it, but we used the Fundamentals install for Legacy PC's to cut the size back...

It's been added to our domain so it's picked up the top level software (Equitrac Client, Securus and some other teeny tiny apps), but it works well I think..

I'm not really aware of any issues... all the kids like them, they'd prefer them to disk drives, but that's so they can listen to music while they work - a valid point, but easily solved with some polite questions and patience I guess.

The 8gb XP versions should be quite handy, though IIRC, a fully updated XP and Office 2003 won't fit on an 8gb drive... (was a few years ago when I last tried so I might have had some other stuff on it)

I heard that putting xp on could reduce the life of the solid state drive on account of it writing a lot more to it than when linux was on.

I mean... I could be wrong. But I read it so it must be true ;)

Certainly XP will write more than the default OS, because the default has been tuned specifically to minimize disk writes, how much this damages the disk is debatable.
