Hello all,

We have a bunch of iPads which I manage with Apple Configurator. A few of our students decided to update some of them to iOS 11 which was nice of them. Of course there's some apps that haven't been updated by the developers so no longer work. However, the 11.0.1 update seems to have introduced another issue-

When loading some apps (e.g. Garageband, iMovie, Pic Collage) we get the 'Sign in to iTunes Store' prompt. I can confirm we did not have this issue on 11.0.0. I've literally just updated to 11.0.1 on one of the iPads to test.

Anyone else getting this? Apple are so annoying!

James.

It's a lot of apps for us. iMovie, Garageband, Pic Collage, Paper by 53, Launchpad...But some apps are fine such as Brushes Redux, WordFoto, Geoboard.

Just spent 45 mins on the phone to Apple. Most of it I spent explaining to them how Configurator 2 works and how I don't need an Apple ID for supervised devices. He started off by saying that iOS11 has introduced the requirement that all apps sync to iCloud and therefore need an Apple ID. I said, we didn't have the issue on iOS 11.0 and we have shared iPads so we don't use Apple IDs.

We moved on to him telling me that I need to unsupervise the device and return it to factory state to investigate whether it's the 11.0.1 update or Configurator causing the problem. It has to be just a bug in the update if it worked on the previous version and I've not changed any settings in AC2. All apps were downloaded via the VPP store before anyone suggests that they might be tied to a different ID.

Who did you ring? It sounds like you need to talk to Apple enterprise support who actually seem to know what they're doing. We're not seeing this issue at all on our new iPads.

Yeah, spoke to Apple Enterprise. According to them, restoring an iPad to factory state with Configurator brings with it iMovie, Garageband, Keynote, etc which were made free a while ago. But I've just done that and it definitely doesn't have those apps. Anyway, that's a separate issue.

How do you manage yours? Just with Configurator?

We're seeing this randomly across our iPads. I think it has something to do with the apps now being system apps and not installed via MDM/AC2 so they're being seen as un-managed apps. As they're un-managed they're not getting their device licensed assigned to them. This is just a theory and not sure if it actually the reason.

That might be the case if it was just the Apple apps but it happens on Pic Collage for us which is 3rd party and was 'purchased' via VPP.

In your MDM do have the ability to attempt to manage an unmanaged app?

We only use Configurator. I don't know if it has this option? We've never needed to use that option before.

New update out today not sure if it helps with this though.

Will certainly give it a try and keep my fingers crossed!

Saw this thread yesterday and have just tried rebuilding one of our iPads and we are getting the same issue. iPad is rebuilt in configurator 2 which installs the enrollment and trust profiles, then profile manager takes over and installs the apps. All third party apps install as expected automatically. All the Apple apps don't install. This is using 11.0.2. Hopefully this gets fixed soon.

im assuming i get this with our ilife apps if i get an ipad out the box connect to dep and supervise. the built in IOS apps just bounce when opening (accounts/store are disabled on all our ipads)

i just told our MDM to remove/reinstall the ilife apps and it fixed it

That's a different issue to my original post. Our apps are already installed but most of them get the 'Sign in to iTunes Store' prompt when opening each app. It's affecting both Apple and 3rd party apps but not all of them!

also same issue here with having to 'Sign in to iTunes Store' . This is only happening to garage band version 2.0.6 which I add from the MAC( not from VPP as this has the new version). the new version of garage band is not compatible with 9.3.5

Not quite the same issue as me. It's happening on most of our apps and all of them have been downloaded through the VPP store which is meant to be the correct way.

Ok so I thought it was only with garageband but I was wrong. i'm having to install 1 or 2 apps at a time to the iPad. for some reason it doesn't install them if I select a few. I installed Google Drive and Toontastic Jr from the local drive. These apps installed but when I run them it asks to sign into iTunes and then when I do all I get is a black screen or the app closes. Tried several times to install/uninstall.

I'm assuming apple somehow are not letting the old version of the apps run on the iPads if there is a new version available.( just a thought could be wrong)

I'm also going to tell staff that if they want any new apps then we need to buy need devices. Would you say this is reasonable?

If you're using Configurator 2 to supervise the devices then you can't use the local apps because they've been downloaded from iTunes using a different Apple ID. You need to only use apps from the VPP store.
