iOS 11.0.1 Issue!!

I've seen the "sign into iTunes" prompt on both DEP and devices supervised with Apple Configurator in iOS11.0, but only with third-party apps pushed by the MDM.

Apple apps worked fine on the iPhone and iPad I used; and the profile I used had the app store disabled, so I didn't test whether apps downloaded on the phone would affect it.

 

I submitted a bug to Apple for this last week, but haven't had a response yet.

If you're using Configurator 2 to supervise the devices then you can't use the local apps because they've been downloaded from iTunes using a different Apple ID. You need to only use apps from the VPP store.

The issue is that apple are only making available the latest versions on the app stores and these are not compatible with my ipads.

Would I be able to use the vpp account on the ipads when I erase it? so if there are apps which are compatible I can still use them?

 

if the above is not possible do I have to setup an iTunes ID for each device individually and get it to download from the app store?

also same issue here with having to 'Sign in to iTunes Store' . This is only happening to garage band version 2.0.6 which I add from the MAC( not from VPP as this has the new version). the new version of garage band is not compatible with 9.3.5

This is the reason....you are adding an app owned by an Apple ID and not from VPP.

Also as you are still trying to use the old method of importing apps etc have you been through this process with apple?

If you are migrating from Apple Configurator 1 you will need to reapply for new managed distribution licenses of Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie and GarageBand. This requires uploading proof of purchase with a list of eligible iPad serial numbers here. (out of date as you can just order new free ones now)

 

MIGRATING YOUR PAID APPS

 

Apple have created an online form for migrating your paid apps to managed distribution. Simply fill out the form here, selecting ‘Migrate from redemption codes to managed distribution’ from the dropdown list. Apple will look at your purchase history and convert all your previously purchased apps to managed distribution.

Hi thanks for that. I just realised what I'd been doing wrong (duh!). so I have a VVP account, a main iTunes account which I used to download apps from iTunes into AC1.7, I also had another apple Id which I used on all the ipads!

 

So now that I got asked for the iTunes account I took my time to read it properly entered in th correct ID and it now opens up the google drive app. Going to redownlad garagband and try that now

It should just be the vpp account details you need from now on. Sounds like you're getting there. The ipads may need to come in to be wiped and then redone so they just install the vpp apps so no trace of another apple id on the ipads. Once all apps have been migrated to mdm if not done already.

I've just updated my Ipads to ios 11.0.3 and the apple apps that previously would not install now seem to be installing. We are using Meraki MDM.

Just a little update on the original issue I started the thread about-

 

I still have an iPad with 11.0.1 installed and it's still asking me to sign in to the iTunes store when loading a lot of the apps. However, I've just noticed another iPad running 11.0.1 and it doesn't have this issue. It has been set up in exactly the same way as the other iPad, supervised with Configurator, all apps downloaded from VPP.

 

Now the fun part is working out why one works and the other doesn't???!!

I would hazard a guess that some one has logged into the iPad at some time with their own Apple ID, when this happens the iPad registers itself with the App Store, this would be the reason that it's asking you.

 

I would DFU the iPad to clear any cached data or tokens on it.

Thanks for the suggestion. We did previously have an iTunes account assigned to it because we needed to with the old version of Configurator. I have completely reset one of the iPads and found we still get the error. I have some more info from my most recent testing which may help though-

 

The iPad I mentioned that was running 11.0.1 and was not getting the 'sign in...' prompt had older versions of some of apps compared to the iPad with the issue. For example, Pic Collage. So Pic Collage was loading fine with no prompt but as soon as I connected it to Configurator and updated the app, I get the prompt. However, the same version of the app running on iOS 10 does not show the prompt.

 

So the issue seems to be a combination of the app version and iOS 11 and quite possibly Configurator too. Which one is most to blame, I don't know.

 

To clarify, as I don't think I put it in the original post. The full message we get in the prompt is-

 

'Sign in to iTunes Store. Sign in to accept this app and assign it to your Apple ID.' And then it has blank boxes to input the ID and password with 'Cancel' and 'OK' buttons.

Also, forgot to say- when the iPad is plugged into Configurator and I look at the list of apps installed, some of them have a duplicate entry. So it appears that two of the same app (and same version) are installed on the iPad, but if I look on the actual iPad, I can see just one copy.

 

I'm assuming this shouldn't be happening?!

Just wanted to update this thread I started by sharing what was causing the 'Sign in to iTunes Store' prompt we were getting with some apps on iOS11.

 

Our iPads are shared between students so we have a filtering system in place which requires them to login on Safari and the session times out every hour (average length of lesson). It's not a perfect system but I think it's the best we can do.

 

The prompt was appearing on some of the apps because it wasn't signed into the filtering system (or had expired since the last user session) and therefore could not connect properly to the internet. Of course, it wouldn't give us a helpful message such as 'This iPad cannot connect to the internet', so it was purely by chance that I stumbled upon the solution.

 

After signing into the filtering on Safari, I can load the apps without getting the iTunes prompt. And even after the session has expired, I can still load the apps without the prompt appearing, so I'm assuming it is just a one-time thing.

 

I don't know why this issue doesn't exist on iOS 10 though.

I have had this issue too - I haven't read the whole thread but will offer my solution, as we encounter this a lot.

 

You can buy the Apps for free in the App Store using your VPP account, then you need to delete the original app from the iPad and push out the VPP version using your MDM, this links it to the iPad without the requirement for an iTunes account.

Thanks for your suggestion but that's a separate issue to my original post. All of the apps have been purchased through the VPP Store which is why I thought it was odd that I was getting the 'iTunes sign in' prompt.

 

The cause is the filtering system we have. But like I say in my previous post, I'm not sure why it wasn't happening on iOS 10 but is on 11.

Ah, that is different to our issue. We definitely had to delete the pre-installed (or possibly installed by pupil) apps and then let the MDM reinstall them.
