Teacher Laptop Policy [Poll]

Hi all,

 

I am doing this poll as research to figure out how school's do teacher laptop purchases on their OS platform. My school is a hybrid (teacher's choose) a few years ago on last major refresh and we have had a whirlwind of logistical problems in implementing when you have staff turnover of 25% and the school is not a pure cloud school (we still purchase software for certain classes and programs that may be Windows dependent).

Windows and they get what they get, which is a standard build that they need for their job.

They don't get one at any of our schools. but any device that gets issued will depend on what the user needs. It might be ChromeOS or it might be Windows. Edited September 19, 2017 by FN-GM

old head said they get paid enough to buy their own. just rolled out 80 new hp g6 250's to all staff now we have a new head that agreed with me

We haven't given out staff laptops since 2005. Each classroom has a projector/speakers and a computer & there's a workroom for quiet work, along with department offices.

 

We have a robust Remote Access system in place for out of hours work (Ericom Accessnow) that is heavily used.

 

Teacher laptops were a nightmare (admittedly back in the XP days) - No matter what you told them they would put personal data on them, let their kids use them, forget to bring them into work, cry about having no admin access, problems with home printers & or outright break them.

Always comes back to the simple questions of - what do they need for their job? What is cost effective. The answer at the moment is a Windows based laptop - just rolled out 20 HP 250 G5s at one school, as an example. I can't see any value in rolling out Macs to staff at all.

We haven't rolled staff wide laptops out for 5-6 years now. Latest staff to get a laptop were SLT last year and they had Windows

Some of my schools still give out teachers laptops, others haven't given out since 2005. With budgets being hit providing a decent remote access system may be more cost effective than supplying staff with laptops to be used at home.

We buy for our teachers, around 20 devices. We have 5 years on site warranty NBD to avoid disruption and avoid data security issues. We issue a few older ones to HLTAS but they don't usually go off site. One of the main reasons is prepaing smart board lessons. The Web based version is slow and not completely compatible.

We've gone for the Smart Advantage licence so staff can use at home for the same reasons.

We provide all teaching staff with a Windows laptop. Standard build. We hardly ever get requests for extra software to be installed, so it seems to work well.

 

As well as using them in the classroom for teaching, they do a lot of admin work on them back in the offices, etc. so having teacher desk PCs rather than staff laptops would be a bit of a no go for us.

We only provide laptops where needed specifically - most departments have one for doing classroom observations. None of the teacher ones can go off-site. Every classroom and office has a PC so little need.

 

SLT are the only ones with 'proper' laptops. They get what they need - so Windows mostly, but open to other OSs if required.

They all get a laptop with a standard Windows build (quality of laptop and build varies from school to school). I'd prefer to go to a hardwired desktop/class and maybe some in the staffroom/shared teacher rooms with remote access if people want to work from home but that always gets shot down.
