Replacing interactive whiteboards

65" is too small for many classrooms. Go above that size and the price goes up, up and up!

Benq said that 65" is the most cost effective because that's the largest size consumers buy

Epson EB-450wi Ultra short throw interactive projector. No need for Smartboards any more just need a white wall.

I'm sure these would suffice for basic use like writing and advancing power point slides etc but anything more that that would be a struggle? This may be the whole primary school used compared to higher education use argument though.

At my previous school we had 2 of these for testing.

They worked really well when we tested them.

The biggest problem is no-one used them as smart boards.

When we tested it it was better than a smart board + projector, but teachers just didn't seem able to comprehend it. They hated them for some reason

 

WE mounted them on a whiteboard and all that happened was staff used them with board markers - even though there was an A3 sign on the board saying not to use markers ><

Sorry but have to disagree with you there. How many schools really utilise the full interactive functionality of an interactive whiteboard. The Epson's work great as an interactive whiteboard.

I work in Primary schools and we use lots of the features in Smart Notebook 17 etc so my observations of how the boards are being used may differ from yours. They also use them for lots of interactive games etc. Also the height we would need to have a projector at to allow reception children to access the screen would make projectors a no go anyway.

Similar to us - if the technology is there our teachers give it a real go. Perhaps something to do with most of our teachers being younger? I don't know.

Yes even the students that train in our schools all want Smart Notebook and they all love the screens. Even teachers that have taught for years enjoy using the new smart panels as it makes their lives easier and they have more confidence it will work in front of the class.

All my primary schools do not have marker boards or marker pens, so no chance of them writing on the boards and 100% chance that they will use the Smartbaords. It has been like this for about 10 years, almost across the entire county.

 

When a sales person suggested at one of the schools we look at alternatives to Smartboard, the teachers very quickly dismissed that idea, as they could not and do not want to teach without that setup.

I never really liked using IWBs, prefer to sit facing the class at my computer and type, using my arms to move stuff around a big screen is tiring

This may be the key difference between Primary and Senior schools. Primary schools are all about dynamic fast paced lessons designed to engage the students. Most primary schools (mine anyway)don't have desks as such just somewhere for the computer to sit.
