Synology vs. QNAP for new NAS

Hi guys,

Looking at picking up a new NAS with 4 bays and either 4 or 8TB total storage. I've only bought a relatively cheap Buffalo in the past but I understand Synology and QNAP are the big players in the NAS world. Any recommendations on who to go for? I've eyed up the DS916+ Synology so far. The use case is primarily for file and server backups. Many thanks.

I have migrated over time from mostly Buffalo to Synology (recently had to replace 4 in one go due to SMB v1 only support) and have been very happy. Mine are used for iSCSI LUNs and SMB backups using Robocopy, no direct access by users. Lovely kit, good support, far fewer disk failures than the Buffalos used to have too.

We are a QNAP house here.

We've got the following:

2 x TVS-EC1580MU-SASRP R2 with 10x 2TB SSDs - main storage (over iSCSI) for our cluster

1 x TVS-863+, with an extra UX-800P, all 16 slots filled with 6TB HDDs - used as a backup NAS

We used to run another unit too, but that was replaced by the TVS-863+

I've used Qnap personally and at work, seem to do the job nicely, have one of the 10 bay ones in one of our offices as an iSCSI target for Backup Exec to use and works well, backups nice and speedy and been rock solid.

Using Synology for our on-site backups here. Had no issues with them to date, but cannot make a statement in comparison to Qnap. Might be better of finding something with the best deal as seems there are positive experiences with both companies.

I'm a synology fan and the ones we've installed have never let me down. I recent set One up with iscsi for VM backup - impressed by performance

To be honest I also had an older qnap and no complaints about that either.

I'm QNAP here at home and I've been looking at getting another one and the Synology seems to equal as fair from what I've seen although I'm yet to see one in the flesh. Price was the only difference between them from what I can remember when I last looked.
