Thoughts on selling PC

Looking into potentially selling my pc

 

You guys reckon i'm better off selling it off as one unit, or breaking it and selling individually? (I built it from scratch)

 

Current Specs...

 

AMD Phenom II x6 1090t (hex core) (Looks to go for around £85 on ebay)

8 GB Ram (4x2GB)

Radeon HD 5670

1TB HDD

CD/DVD-RW Drive

Cooler Master case (not sure of model...)

 

It Currently runs win 10, (which is on an SSD, which i plan to keep)

 

I can either take an image of the SSD and put it onto the 1TB HDD, then use Recovery tools to write a fresh version. (which just sounds like a lot of work... + old data still technically recoverable etc..)

 

or not bother, blitz the HDD, and sell individually.

 

No idea what money i'd get for the pc as it, case is quite big and bulky, but good for customisation potentially...

I'd probably sell it as one, because I'm lazy and wouldn't be bothered to go through the hassle of correctly packaging all the bits up and posting them to all the different people.

This will be a tricky one.

 

The value in this machine looks to be in the CPU. But the CPU will be less valuable when sold as a part of the PC because people willing to pay £85 are usually looking to upgrade their existing machine and not buy complete one.

 

However, there's very little value in any other bit of this.

 

RAM might be £20 if you're lucky. The GPU isn't worth a lot either.

 

I'd be inclined to keep the RAM and HDD as spares, then sell the GFX for whatever you can get and sell the CPU and Mobo as a combo and try and get £90-£100 for it.

Haha, tell me about it! It was worse when I thought id have to buy an External HDD to store some of the stuff on the SSD/ HD in the pc. (further reducing the money i'd make...)

Luckily i have managed to trim it down significantly enough that it isn't an issue now!

Sell it as a unit, if you sell it as parts (unless you sell it local only) you'll end up spending loads on postage.

My internal cabling in that machine leaves a lot to be desired, too....

 

Also, if reinstalling windows on a pc using the windows 10 tools, can you make it format the drive before doing so? I'd want to make sure recoverable stuff isn't on the HDD

I usually find that when selling the CPU, it's best to bundle the motherboard and RAM with it. I've had good prices doing that before, and it's only a small parcel to send. The other parts are not worth a lot (the GPU is worth about £25), and certainly the case is a swine to sell because of postage cost.

Personally, i've never sold any of my used drives. i either keep them, or hit them with a hammer till they turn into a Spanish musical instrument

Fresh windows gets complicated...ish

 

I originally had a vista license, then a win 7 upgrade ( as a student it worked out super cheaper to do it this way)

 

Then as windows 10 came along my pc updated. I've since misplaced any license keys. Guessing my best bet would be to use software like Produkey to get the key and do it that way?

I'd use DBAN to wipe the HDD, as for selling, you'd probably get more if you sold for parts, but it's a lot easier to sell as a whole.

the license is linked to the hardware so you could get an old HDD and install windows 10 and windows servers will pick it up and activate it, no need for any license keys.

Yeah, that'd be the plan going forward..

 

Still, it's working out what's worth my time, i probably have to do quite a bit of work to get it sellable as one unit.

 

My opinion atm is i wont get much more for the pc as a while as i would for just the processor (or processor bundle) But even the bundle has complications because i had to mess around with bios as the RAM Modules have different timings.

The time setting it up as a unit is negligble. Also you won't end up with an empty case lying about cluttering up your house etc. Everything will be gone. Stop being lazy and get it formatted
