I have a flight to Australia in 2 weeks. The plane in flight entertainment has a HDMI input and the seat as a power socket....

 

... I wonder if I could get one in time? :)

I'm torn about this - there's some brilliant games there (SECRET OF FRICKIN' MANA, PEOPLE!), but would I actually play it beyond the first couple of weeks?

 

That's exact what happened for me with the NES classic. I unboxed it when I got it, played it for a couple of hours and I haven't touched it since. In fact I probably spent longer trying to find one than I did actually playing the thing!

 

Having said that I never owned an NES so it doesn't have quite the same nostalgia factor for me as the SNES and most of the 8-bit games don't hold up too well today IMO. The SNES on the other hand has the games I remember. I'd actually quite like the chance to sit down in front of the TV and play all the way though Zelda, Metroid, Secret of Mana and Castlevania.

They're up for pre-order on Argos if anyone wants one.

 

Don't use search, look in menus for technology > preorders then order by highest price/relevance and you should find it.

 

Be quick though as I doubt they'll be on sale for long!

Wow. I knew it would sell out quick but that's crazy. Makes me wonder how many units Nintendo has allocated to each reseller. This is going to be the NES classic situation again only worse!

 

My personal feeling is that Nintendo only sees these mini consoles as hype and publicity generators for keeping their brand in the news in the run up to Xmas so they can sell more of their other consoles and games. If they ever need cash or publicity in future Nintendo knows it can just rerelease another classic console or even reissue a SNES or NES classic!

 

It's clear they're not serious about stocking them properly or keeping them in production long enough to actually meet the demand out there.

 

Still, we'll all be here in a year's time chasing after a Nintendo 64 mini classic no doubt :D

Sure, I loved most of the games there - but I have them on my emulatored up PSP, and I barely fire that up.

 

I think the price tag has done it for me.

 

if square looked at all like releasing the switch version of secret of mana collection (Seiken Densetsu collection) outside japan i might not of bothered but as i dont read Japanese and dont want to boot my wii-u into wii mode and use a horrid controller plugged into a wii mote its probably the only way im going to be able to play som again soon (dosent help ive been watching a playthrough of it on youtube recently). i suspect i will literally play som link to the past and possibly mario world then shove it on my console shelf. might play starwing (wonder if it will be starwing on this as technically thats the name of the european snes game i even have/had a certificate somewher saying i played it at some nintendo event back in the day)

With the talk of Secret of Mana - I may have to fire up the PSP so I can play it.

 

I remember managing to get the form altered Lv8 spells when I played it before.

I want the N64 version to come out...Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye, Snowboard Kids...all good 4-player fun...which is rare these days...with everyone gaming online...which isn't the same.

Unlike Amazon and other retailers, Argos isn't limiting it to one console per customer.

 

I bet there are some people who are going to buy 10+ SNES Classics just to sell on eBay at hugely inflated prices. :eek:

I want the N64 version to come out...Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye, Snowboard Kids...all good 4-player fun...which is rare these days...with everyone gaming online...which isn't the same.

the issue with n64 is because its 1st gen 3d they look and play badly. mario 64 (i never played it first time round n64 and nes are the only nintendos ive never owned) is just awful the camera is awful the depth perception is vague if you dont have rose tinted glasses its aged really badly and is almost unplayable imo

Yes I can see that happening ! I've already got a Rasberry Pi with most the games running on retropi even Starfox 2, but it will be interesting seeing what games on the console appear on the switch when they start the virtual console.

That's pretty much how I feel. A lot of the N64 titles in all honesty weren't very good games and were just an excuse to show of the latest 3D graphics. Even the classic ones like Mario64, Zelda and Goldeneye seem pretty crude by todays standards.

 

I'll still buy an Nintendo N64 Classic Mini if they release it though :o

ive never been able to complete zelda oot (or even played mm) and a lot of people say its the best zelda ive even got it on my 3ds and id honestly much much much rather play skyward sword imo its a better game

SNES mini teardown confirms recycled NES mini tech

 

Curious about the hardware Nintendo is using to power the new SNES mini? Well, wonder no more. Nintendo has rather cunningly repurposed the exact same technology used in last year's NES mini. Crack open the cute SNES-styled outer layer and the mainboard within is almost a complete match for last year's model.

 

Our suspicions that Nintendo had retained the same hardware platform came from several factors: the controller interface is the same, the HDMI and USB placements are identical, the UI is similar, and general system behaviour is also very reminiscent of last year's hardware. On top of that, the SNES Mini's HDMI output tops out at 720p, another match with the older unit. Our theory was confirmed by this tweet from Chiimaero, and today we broke open both pieces of hardware to get a closer look for ourselves.

 

Confirming that the internal mainboard is the same, the corners - carved out to fit within the NES mini shell - remain the same on the SNES model, even though there is no real need for them to be touched at all. As a result, the new piece of hardware looks slightly less elegant internally. Hardware-wise, we're looking at the same off-the-shelf Allwinner R16 SoC (system on chip), featuring four ARM Cortex A7s paired with an ARM Mali 400 MP2 GPU. Hynix provides the single memory chip - a 256MB DDR3 module - and there's a generous 512MB of NAND storage.

 

The magic comes from the bespoke Super NES emulation software layer, likely built from the ground up by Nintendo's Paris-based European Research and Development (NERD) team, running on open source OS, Linux. As Digital Foundry recently discussed, the software not only emulates the Super NES itself, but a range of add-on processors specific to select titles, including the Super FX and Super FX2 chips used for Star Fox, its sequel and Yoshi's Island, along with the SA1 CPU upgrade utilised by Super Mario RPG and Kirby Super Star. Even Super Mario Kart used additional hardware - NEC's DSP-1 was present in every cart, faithfully replicated for the mini consoles.

 

The fact that the SNES mini runs on the same hardware as its predecessor has a number of implications. Among them, we can expect hackers to be looking to exploit the system in short order to add new games - exactly what happened with the NES mini. And secondly, the use of what is essentially the same technology makes it much easier for Nintendo to resume NES mini production. Previously, Nintendo confirmed that a new run of consoles will arrive next summer, while SNES mini console stock will continue to roll out up to Christmas and into 2018. Settling on a common internal hardware design opens up economies of scale for the platform holder.

 

We've been working on the full DF Retro SNES mini hardware review this week and first impressions are positive, with some significant improvements over certain aspects of its predecessor - specifically in scaling up the original 240p output to 720p HDMI.

Spent a while today sitting playing it and have fired up most of the games to give them a try. The rewind feature is really hand for getting past difficult parts of games!

 

Was at a friends yesterday so we spend most of the time playing multiplayer stuff like Streetfighter 2, Starfox, Mario Kart & Contra

 

I've spent most of today playing Zelda, Metroid and Super Mario World. It's a fantastic bit of kit even if it is literally just the same hardware Nintendo released last year in a different plastic shell with a different emulator on it. I know you could put together a retropie setup for less with all the SNES games (albeit illegally) but being able to get an official quality piece of kit designed as it is with two controllers for £80 is still a bargain IMO. I just hope they make enough of them this time round though knowing Nintendo I doubt they will.
