Virgin Superhub 3 - Anyone got one?

I should be getting a new Superhub 3 in the near future, I just want to know if anyone has any expereince of them as I know they are relatively new and on one review I read they had reported some performance issues.

Any advice would be greatly received.

I have one, but I am running it in router mode. Not had any issues with it. No performance issues and it is very stable.

I have one, and currently have 5 kids living under my roof, so in total 6 games consoles, 7 mobile phones, my games PC (wired), 3 laptops kodi box and 2 Now TV boxes all connected and most being used at the same time and it hasn't missed a beat, had it since January. Edited March 24, 2017 by GuyJD

I've had one since last year, happily connected to lots of devices in the house. It just works. I have port forwarding setup on it as well. Only annoyance is you cannot change the dhcp settings to give out a different DNS address.

I've found it to be hit and miss occasionally. Intel created the puma based chipset inside and the original firmware for that chipset from Intel had a glaring issue of latency spikes which is terrible for gamers. Intel have since addressed the issue however Virgin are yet to deploy it. You'll see what I mean when you ping the router internally. Should get a <1ms response but instead you'll get anywhere from 2 - 50ms.

 

Apart from this and the UI being a bit clunky mines been stable for the last 2 months. Also, Virgin changed the security requirements for the wireless passphrase if you want to go ahead and change it so now the minimum characters is 10. No way of changing it.

I have a spare Ruckus AP I can use in router mode if required until they fix the issues should I come across any performance problems.

No problem with a 10 char password though as I use a 13 char phrase

It's doing to job for me, even have port forward for CCTV but the UI is poor, the login password isn't blanked when entering it so its visable.

 

DNS is forced to be theirs so have to change manually on device.

 

Only swapped it because he had to when he came to look at another issue. I am tempted to put it into modem mode when I get a few quid to buy an Ubiquiti AP and use with pFsense.

On the super hub 2 you can disable dhcp. Then setup dhcp in a raspberry pi and use googles DNS servers.

Last I used one, the web interface was painfully slow. Not sure if this has been addressed since. Performance wise (WiFi) it's very good.

I've got one too, and it's not bad, but nothing to write home about. It does it's job, and seems to not be affected by the hot water tank between my home office and the router, unlike previous routers. Its hard for me to compare speeds though, as it was after we had some serious stability issues which were not router linked.

 

Downside is the large power adapter which is a shame really, as it's quite a good looking piece of kit.

Can't say I've noticed any issues like the ones people are having on the Virgin Media forums, I'm looking on ebay now for Superhub 2AC's, might be worth having one as a backup as long as VM will register it to my account if things do get bad.

Virgin used to have a network setup that didn’t help - especially with static IP’s. However unless there’s a specific issue with SH3 passing packets I don’t see where the problem would be. But get rid of the SH and buy a decent router. Mikrotik is my choice.

The SuperHub does have major issues with VPNs to be fair - they're not wrong.

 

It's definitely the SH as I have mine in modem mode and it works fine but it doesn't consistently work if it's in router mode - sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

There’s some credibility to this response, VM extensively use GRE tunnelling to connect subscriber modems to public IP addresses and this breaks your own VPN tunnels.

We have our own firewall at each end of an l2tp VPN, on the VM site we had to get them to switch the site back to using a sticky DHCP assigned and use a dyn dns service as their static IP modem mode wouldn’t pass VPN site to site traffic.

The VM Static IP routed service is fine for hosting your own services behind your own firewall JUST as long as it’s not a VPN !

I have Virgin Media here with a SH3 in Modem mode and a Smoothwall in front of it acting as DHCP.

 

Never had any issue hosting VPNs/RDP and I do have a VM Static IP.

The issues we've seen are exclusively when using the SH3 in router mode - I use mine in modem mode and have no issues.
