Strange Metal Spring Clip on Network Cable

Can anyone tell me what this addition to an ethernet cable is for?

 

We bought a job lot of Cat6 cables on ebay, and some have this. Just can't work out it's purpose! It is sprung loaded and moves in and out.

My guess it would aid the removal of the cable from the port as some can be t**ts to remove.

I thought it might be the grounding pin for the shielding but I've never seen such a cable. Best guess I can come up with now though.

Don't have a foggiest on that! However it gives me an idea - remotely ejectable ethernet cables!

Method for electrocuting any students who routinely unplug network cables?

Looks a bit like an upside down PatchLock cable, when the button is pressed in, or fully out, does the clip get blocked from working? If you want to test it, I would suggest you do it in an unterminated module though incase there are problems/you can't remove it again!
