Best Rucksack

I travel a bit by train and have a rather small (20L) rucksack which does the job but its carrying absolute minimal. I am after something a little bigger and bit tougher and that is still small but practical for in the likes of London.

 

I want to be able to put a jumper or small waterproof coat in rather than wearing all layers.

 

Any recommendations without breaking the bank? Any brands to go for/avoid, ideally waterproof, laptop slot not necessary but if it has one bonus.

 

I plan on doing a bit more travelling this year via train due to some issues I have in distance driving now and also my first time to London in a few weeks I want something better than I have.

 

Also if it can fit my SLR in great to save carrying my camera bag that would also be a bonus.

I absolutely love LowePro gear. It lasts ages, are ridiculously practical and their customer service is top notch if anything happens to your bag. I had them replace a 3 year old camera messenger bag a couple of months ago under their lifetime warranty because one of the zips had broken. They didn't make that particular bag anymore so they let me choose from any replacement on their store, all at their own expense. They're pricey but they're totally worth it. I have a messenger one that can hold my 13" MacBook Pro, DSLR, and about 3 lenses with plenty of room to spare for other bits and pieces like water bottles. This one is my go to for travelling with a lot of gear.

 

My second choice is Wenger - very rugged and practical and they last absolutely years. I'm still using the one my parents bought me... that one must be coming up to 10 years old or so now.

 

IMO if you're trusting a bag with £1000s of equipment, splurging a little isn't going to hurt!

Not sure about price, or even if they're available in the UK, but for sheer quality I would recommend a Macpac. I still use a Day Pack that I bought in 1990(!)

I think it's indestructible. It's SO comfortable too. Not too big, not too small. (hence day pack, and not backpack). I even took it (again) to BETT this year to carry all the loot...

Have a look at Berghaus or Osprey.

 

I quite often go for hikes with friends and we all have either make. I still have a Berghaus bag i bought ten years ago and it looks almost new.

Super bag especially for gym/fitness goers. They are expensive, but are built to last.

+1 for Wenger - I use one every day for school - total 2 miles of walking with a bus journey in between. Very practical, smart for work, lightweight and comfortable. Have had it for over a year now, and is still in fantastic condition.

Definitely Wenger, tried other makes and always gone back. Samsonite are also nice, however for back suppport Wagner is the daddy.

Go with whatever gives you the best support. Take your gear along with you, stuff it in there and see if it fits.

I have the berghaus one you're looking at there, I think it's quite a decent bag. I use it for day to day use, but also for when I need something for days out walking.

Exactly this. I have been using a Lowe Alpine Edge II 18 daily for the past year or so to carry my work stuff and camera. It holds my thin 14" laptop in the bladder pocket no problem.

Before I got the smaller Lowe bag I used a Swiss Wenger bag similar to this one I used it every day for work to cart around a big chunky 15" laptop, assorted cables and tool for 4 and a half years. Bag still gets used when I'm away overnight with work and still looks nearly new. Which for me is close to a miracle! Most of my bags definitely have the "distressed" look going on.

 

Both are very comfortable to be wearing all day while travling too which is good.

Got one of these and have had it for about 3 years, not cheap but has lasted, 29 L. Being on and off Public transport and bundled in numerous vehicles.
