localzuk Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 So, this is something I hadn't spotted. Apparently the new 7th generation Intel CPUs don't run Windows 7 any more. Bit of an issue for those of us still running a Windows 7 network! So, don't get caught out! Time to start planning the migration to Windows 10 methinks. 1
FN-GM Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 To be fair it is 8 year old this year. Also loads of machines are coming with TMP 2.0 chips, all the latest Dell's for example. They won't work with Windows 7 either.
mikeprice Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 So I guess the thousands of PCs still on XP (e.g. several NHS trusts I have noticed) will also have a problem then!
DalekSec Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 It won't be a problem for a few years i'm guessing, can't see companys that use xp and windows 7 in abundance going out and buying a fleet of brand spanking new 7th gen laptops! I think most laptops reasonably come with 4th/5th gen at the moment so for the reasonably priced ones to be on 7th gen it's gonna be a couple of years atleast
synaesthesia Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 Yeah, there's a good reason the NHS and other government departments spent a small fortune paying people like HP, Microsoft and Dell backhanders to keep them up to date with reasonably newer hardware on ancient operating systems.

But it also takes a few years for large IT estates to upgrade, so the time is now really.

VeryPC are 7th gen only on ThinBooks now, and looking for 6th Gen on the Dell site gives slim pickings. Well, damn, I appear to have no memory at all. Early onset dementia?
Arthur Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 (edited) Also loads of machines are coming with TMP 2.0 chips, all the latest Dell's for example. They won't work with Windows 7 either. We purchased some E7470s recently and they support downgrading the TPM firmware from 2.0 to 1.2 in order to support Windows 7. A few other models support this too... http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/enterprise-client/w/wiki/11850.how-to-change-tpm-modes-1-2-2-0 That said, this probably won't apply to the new Kaby Lake models. Well, damn, I appear to have no memory at all. Early onset dementia? Let's hope not! Edited February 6, 2017 by Arthur

So going back to the old thread - if we have 6th Gen processors come 17th July 2017 we need to upgrade to Windows 10? We have just put in an order for 140 desktops which will come with 6th Gen processors.
Arthur Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 if we have 6th Gen processors come 17th July 2017 we need to upgrade to Windows 10? MS have extended the deadline another year. https://arstechnica.co.uk/information-technology/2016/03/windows-7-windows-8-1-skylake-support Microsoft announced earlier this year that support for Skylake processors in Windows 7 and 8.1 would be quite limited: compatibility, reliability, and security fixes would only be offered until 17 July 2017. After that date, only security fixes would be made available, and those security fixes would only be created if they had no implications for the compatibility or reliability of others platforms. Full support for Skylake processors—and its successors—was only to be offered to Windows 10. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this has resulted in some pushback from enterprises, and Microsoft has shifted its policy in response. The window for compatibility, reliability, and security fixes has been extended by a year to 17 July 2018. The limitations on security fixes have also been removed; now all security fixes will be made available—until 14 January 2020 for Windows 7 and 10 January 2023 for Windows 8.1. Nonetheless, Microsoft still asserts that Windows 10 is the best option for new systems. 1

So security fixes will continue until 2020? So no rush to upgrade to 10 then. We can continue with our own timetable which was 2018/19 for the switch.
Arthur Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 So no rush to upgrade to 10 then. As long as you don't purchase any Kaby Lake-based PCs between now and 2018/19 you will be fine. 1
Arthur Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Microsoft blocks Windows 7/8 Updates on AMD Ryzen and Intel Kaby Lake Systems Symptoms When you try to scan or download updates through Windows Update, you receive the following error message: Unsupported Hardware Your PC uses a processor that isn’t supported on this version of Windows and you won’t receive updates. Additionally, you may see an error message on the Windows Update window that resembles the following: Windows could not search for new updates An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) found: Code 80240037 Windows Update encountered an unknown error. Cause This error occurs because new processor generations require the latest Windows version for support. For example, Windows 10 is the only Windows version that is supported on the following processor generations: Intel seventh (7th)-generation processors AMD “Bristol Ridge” Qualcomm “8996" Because of how this support policy is implemented, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 devices that have a seventh generation or a later generation processor may no longer be able to scan or download updates through Windows Update or Microsoft Update. 2
FN-GM Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Its nuts they are not supporting it on Windows 8, as it is still in main stream support!
fiza Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 At least its not 6th Gen. As we are about to take delivery of a good few!!
zag Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Yep just got caught out by this with the new @VeryPC kabylake laptops. There is no graphics driver available for them in windows 7. We are not even going to touch Windows 10 for a few years, so may need to start looking for other suppliers :/
Ertech Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 (edited) This is a handy MS link -https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/11675/windows-7-windows-8-1-skylake-systems-supported HP's website specifies models that supports systems for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on Skylake Systems and does not say anything about the deadline... http://www8.hp.com/us/en/ad/windows-10/win7supporteddevices.html Edited March 16, 2017 by Ertech
FN-GM Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Windows 10. Why delay the invertible? Thats why I think. Start now so its not a rush for the Jan 2020 Windows 7 deadline.

Any new PC that you get with a 7th gen Core i CPU is going to have this issue. It's not even as if going AMD is going to make the difference as Ryzen has the same issue.
jslate1980 Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Looks like Microsoft won't provide updates for windows 7 - 8.1 on newer chipsets anyway http://winaero.com/blog/new-cpus-no-updates-windows-7-windows-8-1/

So, you're going to start struggling sooner rather than later. We've bit the bullet and accepted that, for now, we're going to have some teachers using Windows 10 laptops.

Or go down the referb route (with suppliers like @ICTDirect_Dave) until some schools do find the time to work out the kinks they have with Windows 10. More than one was the skin a bananna. 1
