We're never less than 3 gens behind so we'll run into this problem in 2020 when we're running Windows 2019 Pro.

Or go down the referb route (with suppliers like @ICTDirect_Dave) until some schools do find the time to work out the kinks they have with Windows 10. More than one was the skin a bananna.

dragging this up again as we are in a similar boat to alot of other that we are not migrating to 10 just yet, as for the updates for 7 on skylake plus i assume these can still be manually installed into the image?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. If you have skylakes, you'll be fine to run Win7 on them up until 2020 (when MS support for Win7 ends) and drivers from Intel shouldn't be an issue. However, as soon as you introduce any kabylake systems, you'll need to be in a position to run Win10, as Intel won't be providing any kabylake drivers for Win7.

Disables the "Unsupported Hardware" message in Windows Update, and allows you to continue installing updates on Windows 7 and 8.1 systems with Intel Kaby Lake, AMD Ryzen, or other unsupported processors.

 

How it works

• At system boot the wufuc scheduled task runs as the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM user.
  
• wufuc determines what service host group process the Windows Update service runs in (typically netsvcs), and injects itself into it.
  
• Once injected, it applies a hook to LoadLibraryEx that automatically patches wuaueng.dll when it is loaded.
  
• Any previously loaded wuaueng.dll is also patched.
