Always on the side of caution. Personally I'd phone them up and see. The Refund goes to a @live.com email address.

Because you're the kind of person who doesn't have the capacity to know a scam when they see one?

 

There's nothing to arouse suspicions behind the scenes that I can see.

 

I've actually had this one and wondered what a Freedom of Information Act Team would be doing telling you that you had a refund due?! You don't actually have to open the email to know it's dross

Yeah, it's most likely someone from the Interwebs just wanting some advice... you see a website called EduGeek and you think... knowledgable IT folk, I'll ask them, they may be able to help.

I just looked out an email that I have that really is from HMRC

 

It has the following at the bottom

I know a low income person who had a PAPER LETTER from HMRC which said you can go online to claim your refund... but it was a REAL letter, and took you to a high end validation process. They encourage this by saying, request online pays your refund much sooner. And it worked safely.
