I've got a stinking cold right now so can't even hear myself properly at the moment! lol! I've got a shiny new server on order and am sooo tempted to get this on it from the start. Pete Installed on the KMS server fine, slmgr /upk > slmgr.vbs /ipk xxxxxxx > slmgr.vbs /ato = success Now to just force some clients to activate to finally kick in, will let you know. 1

Michael Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I agree with others - why release an Evaluation ISO and not the actual ISOs? I wonder if they're going to include the latest October patches (due 11th October), but I'd be surprised if this were the case, or if it were something serious?

So there's the first crucial missing part in the eval...

Steve Having just read the article that's purely just a MS change to cover licensing and allow VDI in Azure, has nothing to do with the Desktop Experience feature other than the mention of it being improved. Last time i tested TP 4 or 5 (cant remember which) the feature was still there, this time in the Eval there physically isn't a User Interface option. Why they would of removed it from Eval is beyond me?! Also due to the Graphical User Interface main options missing from the feature list you cannot remove and add the GUI on the fly. What is it that you're missing from them that you think the Desktop Experience would give you? Last time I looked had everything that people normally use. Sound/Tool wise (Bearing in mind this is Windows 10 so a lot of the "7ish" stuff doesn't exist anyway) Unless I'm missing something :s Steve

I feel we're talking about two different options though :s That's the actual server host with Desktop Experience like old school Session Host, I'm talking Personal Session Hosts which are effectively each user gets their own session-host that's acting almost Win10 ish think VDI wise Steve
CAWJames Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I can confirm it's no longer in the feature list, and not even available as a powershell "install-windowsfeature" option. Although it does say Desktop Experience when you select the OS in setup, so maybe its now baked in?

There is now just Core, GUI and Nano which has to be chosen at install. Uninstalling and re-installing GUI's introduced in 2012 is now gone again. So just like the full screen metro start menu that Microsoft decided to U-Turn on so have they with installing/uninstalling GUI's on servers. Edited October 6, 2016 by Tefters

No GUI does speed things up drastically and requires less resources. I have always been in the same boat as yourself up til now and will be pushing a few servers like DC's etc... over to no GUI

The GUI can't be that demanding on resources! I just think the argument is somewhat flawed - it's still Windows in the background and can't be compared to the likes of Linux. Web providers still favour Linux due to its open source code and low overhead, but removing the Desktop Experience can't speed the server up that drastically surely? Please prove me wrong someone!

Well, the first things that come to mind are all the security patches we get for Internet Explorer etc and how much quicker Core seems to reboot than GUI. Overall, I'll be sticking to Core where we can to make the most of our virtual environment's resources.
