IE 11 and Youtube, the end?

Well, it seems that IE11 will no longer work with youtube no matter what I try.

 

In compatibility mode it says it needs flash installing (even though flash 22 is installed and verified)

In normal mode you just get the endless spinning circle and no video

 

In Chrome it works fine.

 

For us that is the death of IE, no youtube, no use!

Did it just stop working for you? I'm sure there was a recent thread about an update that caused some issues with videos in IE if an option wasn't ticked, will have a nosy

It worked in compatiblity mode until very recently.

 

I could never get it to work in html5/normal mode - just the endless spinning circles.

 

I've tried on Win7 & Win10 and it fails for anyone (admin,staff,students) so unlikely to be a policy issue. I've also tried as an admin bypassing the smoothwall filter and it fails as well. So it fails pretty comprehensively across several OS's and versions - thats where I'm stumped and ready to finally give up on it!

Works fine here on Windows 10 IE 11. You are not using the Youtube education are you as this no longer exists. This was active in our Smoothwall as a divert. There is a new Youtube restricted mode in Smoothwall now.

I also found that on Windows 10 in IE 11 it is best to disable protected mode. This makes everything run smoothly.

I've started encountering this problem on Windows 7 IE11. A red banner tells you to download the latest version of Flash when trying to play a video on Youtube. Adding Youtube to the compatibility list and the other method of reregistering the Flash .ocx file located at C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash then restarting doesn't seem to work. Changing the ActiveX filtering setting doesn't make a difference. I'm at a loss, I've had to install Chrome on whiteboard laptops so teachers can use Youtube but this isn't a permanent solution. I may have to speed up the upgrade to Windows 10, that'll be a nightmare with the staff here...

Yep.

 

I've also discovered it's not just Youtube, Education City is unusable as well. Flash is the very latest version so my bet is on IE11 being the culprit.

Yup, latest flash installed here and not working on ie11 so basically given up and used chrome.

On IE take YouTube out of compatability settings. This removes the red bar with "you need Adobe Flash warning".

 

Then in Internet Option on the Advanced tab, under multimedia settings ensure that the following options are all ticked.

 

Enable Alternative codecs in HTML5 media elements

 

Play animations in webpages

 

Play sound in webpages

 

Had this issue previously and even though ie11 had been fine for YouTube, vimeo, etc.... they suddenly stopped working. In the GPO's all three were set as not configured so this is an update it seems which de-selects for some. Once I enabled those the issue walent away.

I've removed Youtube from the compatibility list (it was only there for testing) and checked all the settings you mentioned but they were already ticked. I'm still getting the red bar saying I need Flash.

Does it work if you plug headphones in? As strange as it sounds, there's an issue with the generic "HD Audio" Microsoft Windows 7 driver where it causes this. If so, installing the proper driver fixes it.

I prefer Chrome but IE works better with Sharepoint 2010 and our County Outlook Web App site. Even using IETab with Chrome doesn't work very well. I've started installing Chrome as and when needed and I've been telling staff to only use it for Youtube.

We've got the same problem. We've got Firefox as a secondary browser and now tell staff to use that for YouTube.

Yup we are using a smoothwall utm but it affect all users regardless of policy so I can't see what I could change!

We use Lightspeed Rocket for filtering and I suppose it is possible that something is being blocked in IE only but I wouldn't know what.

We have a no end of issues with Flash and IE11 on Windows 7 here also. Flash is installed but random sites just don't load properly and say Flash isn't installed.

 

Tried all the usual tricks - reinstall, headphones etc... Nothing works.

 

I have just started telling people to use Chrome for all Flash based sites.

We had a problem with IE11 and Youtube errors.

Smoothwall dude remoted in and said there's a new category called HD STREAMING which by default is blocked (because some schools have a slow bandwidth). Removing this fixed it.

We fixed this by giving the teachers Chrome but we also found that if you disable flash in ie and remove the * from allowed sites it runs ok. It is a much safer way of working and the teachers can individually allow site for flash if required.
