It appears so. Tested that this morning, checked my egg status, left the app open and put my phone in my pocket (intentionally as part of the test, it would lock automatically after 30s). Walked halfway to work, checked egg status, no distance improvement. It also hadn't moved my character, and said there was no GPS. A few seconds later it found my GPS and made me run through peoples' houses at lightspeed to reach my current location.

It's entirely possible that it's something to do with my device locking, but I've allowed Pokemon GO to use background data.

Adding to my previous post, one of the comments on that page says if you put the app in Power Saving mode it doesn't recognise your movement whilst your screen is off. I shall investigate this during my walk home.

@X-13, ZH left the link to the .apk in my first post, so I presume we're allowed to talk about getting it on Android, since sideloading is a thing that Android natively allows. The workaround for iOS isn't something that's allowed as per Apple's T's&C's.

on iphone, the powersaving function just darkens the screen and throws up a screensaver whenever you tip the phone upsidedown (put it in your pocket)

i went out last night at about 9 for and hatched two eggs and my phone was in my pocket on powersaving mode most of the time so for me it definitely works.

I was referring to the power saving option in the app specifically, not the one in the operating system :)

Perhaps it works differently on Android and iOS then. I didn't notice any difference when I enabled it on Android, the screen wasn't dimmer and animations were just as fluid as they were before (I assumed I'd get dimmed lights and choppier animations)

As was I, it should just change every time the phone is upside down.

Also as far as I'm aware it does absolutely nothing while you're playing normally, I think they assumed people would put their phones in their pockets while they walked around to hatch eggs etc.

Eh, a gym near me is being guarded by a CP 1099 Aerodactyl.. you kind of have to out-grind other players who are constantly playing in order to have a fighting chance, and I certainly don't have the same amount of free time as most of these trainers so I doubt I'll be playing very long!

I'm seeing that problem here, too.. Some oft he nearby gyms are 500+ and the players are only level 10 or so, so not that far ahead of me. That being said, I'm more concerned about playing with friends and catching 'mons for now. I'll take on gyms when I have beefier stuff.

But people having more time to play than you will always be an issue in games where there's no matchmaking. It just comes with the territory I guess.

I don't think that is terribly accurate. I got a high CP Squirtle from a 10km egg and a a few Paras and Bellsprouts from 2km eggs.

I just took out a gym that contained a 600CP and a 900CP pokemon using two ~250CP pokemon. I matched the ability types so I was strong against them and executing my dodging properly. I took no damage.

Which doesn't work when the app constantly eats inputs... so many dodges that turn into attacks. :(

Probably not 100% accurate. Treat everything you read as an aggregation of user data (of which some may be inconsistent) rather than hard facts, that's what I do at least :)
