I really really don't like the advert after 1st post - I associate it with being at bootom of a thread and stop scrolling :( so I miss the posts below.

No doubt its staying but its very very annoying. :(

regards

You know why the adverts are there and that they have to be placed where they will be seen. Without them there would be no site, as the cost of keeping the site up is fairly high. If it came down to a banner or a subscription which would you choose? Its not like there are pop up windows and such everywhere or anything is it?

Whilst I have to agree with this sentiment, I too find the advert distracting. Could it not be placed above the post as it is on other pages?

As CyberNerd pointed out - use FF to block them. I use the Adblock Plus add on. Checkout:

http://adblockplus.org/en/

With that you won't get any adverts at all once you have set your wildcard...

These are what I have set - just in case it helps.

Hope that helps.

Thank you. When we want to hold conferences and get the guys down to BETT (hopefully SETT as well this year) again and we cant due to lack of funds we know where to look. Please remeber that unlike most sites we reinvest what we get back to our members.

It cost upwards of £100 per day just to feed people and transport them around during BETT week alone!

I'd happily pay a little subscription through school finds ;)

I'm still trying to convince the school to cough up £50 to donate funds to an open source CMS I use for the school website. It's been 18 months or more since I first approached SMT about this. :(

I am at 2 minds about the advert - yes, it can be a bit distracting but then that is why we have scroll bars.

The thing to remember is that the adverts on here are actually sometimes quite useful - for example the usb keys advert helped me the other day.

I don't block adverts on any site - how can a small site survive if they don't get any income from sponsors?

I hate the ones that take over your page if you scroll over them (like on yahoo) now they annoy me... oh and the ones that have sound... GGRRRR

The ones on here are fairly subtle if you axe me.

if we click on the ad's do you get more money?

No that is old hat now. What happens is that our agents (IDG Communictions) will 'sell' x amount of advert space to a client, say £500 per month. Once that is used up they get no more ads on the site until the next month. The problem is that we have to provide traffic figures to them (hit rates etc) so that they can 'sell' us to them.

This year we have some major costs coming down. We are buying our own server and paying for it to be hosted somewhere safe and reliable. I also intend for us to do SETT (any Scottish members take note. We will need staff for the stand!) and we have lots of 'nice things' line up for all of you guys. All of which cost a lot of money.

Remember, everything we do for you is free, and always will be. This however costs us.

My personal favorites are the banner ads that use IE exploits to drop a trojan/virus/worm on to the machine.

I have tweaked the location of the ad's which should be better now.

As for the necessity of ad's, its currently the only way to generate the revenue we need for shows.

When you block ad's on edugeek, any ad's on edugeek you effect the value your vists have. We can maybe show we get x amount of hits per day but if users block the ads advertisers dont see the numbers and then are less likely to buy more ad campaigns involving the site which only cuts our possible revenue for bett/events.

Most of the ad's/sponsorship are relevant to education which means may spot the odd offer you would like to use which is not a bad thing.

If you do run Adblocker Plus etc you can right click on the icon in the bottom right corner of FF and click "disable on www.edugeek.net", this will mean any ad's (from any provider) that are displayed on edugeek are shown in your browser. This helps support edugeek and means you the members get better events etc for it. Its like donating but without the need to donate and you never know you might spot a deal ;)
