The IT co-ordinator has asked me about cameras for the students. She has a budget of around £500 and is looking for 12-15 cameras for the children to use. She is wondering whether a phone might be an idea due to resolution etc. Will a phone work as a camera without a SIM card?

 

Does anyone have any advice on what we should get? It seems difficult to get a reasonable camera for a decent price.

 

We do have lovely Lenovo Yogas but when you fold the keyboard to use them as a tablet, the camera is covered up.

We just have some cheapo point and shoot cameras. CPC is a good place.

 

These look good for the money - VIVITAR - VX022-BLU-INT - DIGITAL CAMERA, 10.1MP, VX022, BLUE | CPC UK they have them in other colours too. You should be able to buy SD cards too with that budget.

 

Then these ones are the next ones up: http://cpc.farnell.com/vivitar/vs425-pur/digital-camera-16mp-l-ion-vs425/dp/PY31985 bit more expensive, more megapix and zoom.

We got 5 nikon coolpix s32's (i think that model has been replaced with s33 now) for the kids to use and they have lasted really well. Mainly use them for school trips and kids photography projects, as they have ipads for everything else.

 

They are pretty robust and water proof, so no worries when they are out and about. They have rechargeable batteries and are simple to use. The only thing I don't like about them is they use non standard usb cables, but I couldn't find any that did and were suitable.

 

They may be a bit over budget for what you want, especially when you have got sd cards for them, but worth considering just because of how well they seem to last.

you'd only get 3 for the budget though....

 

Should be able to get more than 3, but that's only because the iPod Touch is no longer manufactured, so one assumes there would be cheap second hand ones.

Past few cameras I've ordered were the Fujifilm XP80, main reason was the lens doesn't extend out of the body as that seemed to be how most of our cameras got broke.

The Nikon s33 is a similar camera and is currently £70 in argos.

They are both over your budget though.

Argos also have the Polaroid IE090 for £40 but reviews are mixed and it runs off 3xAA.

I would suggest getting ones with rechargeable batteries - I have had several occasions where teachers have taken cameras out only to find the battery drains after 3 pics.

hey seem to be quite good at charging them here - but ymmv
