SYSPREP Failure In Windows 10

I have built my reference image ready to deploy to a bunch of new machines but when I am trying to sysprep I am getting the following error:

Sysprep was not able to validate your Windows installation. Review the log file at %WINDIR%\System32\Sysprep\setupact.log for details. After resolving the issue, use Sysprep to validate your installation again.

 

I have had a look through the log and there appear to be a couple of errors but I can't make any headway on them. Has anyone else run into this who could point me tin the right direction?

I presume Windows is activated and you've double checked your Activation Key? That's all that comes to mind.

Cause

Sysprep has an additional provider that's added in Windows 10 and Windows 8 to clean Appx packages and to generalize the image. The provider works only if the Appx package is a per-user package or an all-user provisioned package.

 

• Per-user package means that the Appx package is installed for a particular user account and is not available for other users of the computer.
  
• All-user package means that the Appx has been provisioned into the image so that all users who use this image can access the app.
  

If an all-user package that's provisioned into the image was manually deprovisioned from the image but not removed for a particular user, the provider will encounter an error while cleaning out this package during sysprep. The provider will also fail if an all-user package that's provisioned into the image was updated by one of the users on this reference computer.

you cant as far as im aware remove apps then sysprep. If you want to remove apps you need to remove them before you roll the image out to a test/setup pc then make changes and sysprep. To do that you need the wim file and a few powershell commands and dism then once you fire out this modified wim installed updates software etc it should sysprep fine but if you remove built in apps then sysprep it fails

Thanks for your suggestions so far. I am not trying to remove any of the apps. I just want to sysprep the device to capture an image. It appear that Candy Crush () is at fault here. I have run the command:

 

get-appxpackage -alluser | format-list -property packagefullname,packageuserinformation

 

Which has shown Candy Crush in this list, however when trying to remove-appxpackage or remove-appxprovsionedpackage I am given the error "Package Not Found"

have you tried to do a Windows update using the powershell scripts? I had problems with this as it tried to update apps and then messes up sysprep - and I also saw the same problem your facing with the package not found error.

I had this problem. It is indeed all about the Windows Store apps. Even if you just move the tile of the start menu it causes it to fail.

 

I know this doesn't help now, but try doing an image with Windows 10 LTSB. Found it less problematic when sysprepping. ish.

Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -Online | Select PackageName

 

That should return a list of all packages. Next you need to copy the full package name from that list into the next command, in my example i am removing the 3D Builder program.

 

This command will remove the app for all new users that are logging into the system

remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -package Microsoft.3DBuilder_11.0.47.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe -online

 

To remove it locally for your user you need to run

remove-Appxpackage -package Microsoft.3DBuilder_11.0.47.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe

 

Once you've ran both commands you should be able to sysprep the machine but you may find there are alot of apps to remove and sysprep will only inform you about one app at a time!

I Presume it is the xbox app which I cannot uninstall which is grey out ?

I have removed the xbox app and now its telling me there is more lol

Yeah they are a nightmare. What I think was happening with me - I had a GPO set to block apps. So when I attached my image machine to the domain it faffed with them and then it wouldn't sysprep.

 

So then I used Windows 10 LTSB and didn't attach it to the domain to install software. That seemed to remedy all of my issues.

Iv managed to sort it out, even that I have run a command to remove apps from the next logins locally it hadn't removed it on the current profile which I was logged in at

 

How Microsoft have created windows 10 like this and its still flaky I do not know why they have done this, its not even great for education.

I had a mistake the first time i was trying to remove apps and that was to login with more than one account which provisioned a load of apps for that user aswell. Caused me to rebuild the image.

 

To remove the apps locally from the user account you will need to fun the remove-Appxpackage command from my above post. The provisioned command will stop that app from installing for any other user that signs into the machine, so its best to run both commands to stop the apps from reinstalling and to remove the apps from the current user.

 

Because sysprep is flakey with the apps it will only ever prompt you stating that there is an issue with one app at a time which is a MASSIVE pain.

The reference image computer/VM shouldn't be joined to the domain at all. Surely that's the issue, not the edition of Windows you are using?

id almost go with that but youre better off mounting the standard wim then removing the junk and unmounting then use the modified standard wim so xbox etc never even gets deployed its never been in the system as its probably quicker to do that once than script it or at least not significantly slower (and you can script that as well though not sure id want to)

Sorry to hijack the thread but I followed your steps but still get the following errors -

Any ideas why I cant remove this? I only have Administrator & Guest disabled so only one alternative admin user is active. The SID for the "installed" appx doesnt match one on the PC.

This should work, I have found out that windows 10 has provisioned apps and installed apps

You need to run powershell as an admin and bypass the unrestricted policy which enables you to run the file within powershell once that's done, on the same powershell screen you need to cd c:\ or should I say navigate using cd all the way to your file location and it will remove all the apps which you have left on you machine.

 

Then you should be able to sysprep your machine with no hassel

then rerun sysprep until you have no more errors.

This should work, I have found out that windows 10 has provisioned apps and installed apps

You need to run powershell as an admin and bypass the unrestricted policy which enables you to run the file within powershell once that's done, on the same powershell screen you need to cd c:\ or should I say navigate using cd all the way to your file location and it will remove all the apps which you have left on you machine.

 

Then you should be able to sysprep your machine with no hassel

 

Yea should have mentioned that, provisioned apps will be installed for the user the first time they sign in and installed apps are the current installed apps for that user.

 

It's best to unprovision the apps you dont need and then uninstall them all.
