chris_uk Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 If your offering we haven't had a RAM upgrade in a long time and some of our machines are actually still running 1gb and I honestly feel sorry for the staff using those machines but I think everyone's in a similar boat in some way or another. hardtailstar Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 We cable tie all wires together behind the computer, but that only stops thefts. We still get kids pulling keys off or bending up the mice buttons. We bill each department for any damage. The rooms that tend to get damaged the most is the rooms which are shared. I go round and visually check each room each holiday, I can then at least put the damage in a time frame.

Garacesh Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Urgh. Vandalism. The amount of laptops I've had to Frankenstein back to life due to vandalism is utterly absurd. But I shan't allow them to die, not unless we do not have the parts. Keyboards aren't usually an issue. We have the plastic on mouses bent back so they don't click any more, but we've found some from Microsoft that make this significantly more difficult so that's on the way down. (Link for those interested, we don't buy from MS, but it's that model.) In Tech we have some keyboards that have had soldering irons taken to them. Because why wouldn't you? I tie off all cables where I can (or use shorter ones where possible). Honestly, unless your staff are on top of it and keeping check on their equipment, there's really not a whole lot you can do. For computers and laptops I query the event log and get the last user, but that's really the height of it. 1
Fazza Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 We have a Vandalism Toolkit containing all sorts of glues and plastic fronts that we had the DT department make to glue on to the front of some of our older PCs that the students enjoy breaking the grills on! Not forgetting the graffiti remover for getting rid of phallic symbols that have been drawn/etched on to the odd case!

I can see this happening occasionally but not with the frequency that we see it: Wilful vandalism is the ONLY explanation. 1

My example is the only accidental breaking of kit I can think of. The majority of other damaged equipment is blatant. I had to rearrange a keyboard just this morning so it no longer had rude words spelled out on it. 1

Had to get rid of a few once as they had been even more creative than usual and used keys from multiple keyboards to write/type the word they wanted! Vandalism falls on deaf ears at most places I'm afraid and the only practical answer is to have CCTV and a security guard to monitor it constantly!! #nevergonnahappen
Davit2005 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 At a previous place the track pad buttons were gauged out on 2 different laptops, this took me about 2-3 hours to repair each one, the whole top cover of the laptop had to be replaced, sorry but I cannot see anyway to excuse this. These were departmental laptops so the department should of been held responsible. Unfortunalety some of the attitude I've seen is they will say to the students to research something but not walk around and interacting with the students and see what they are actually up to. This and then not checking the laptops as they go back into the trolley. At another place they had CCTV in the ICT suites and the ICT area was also charged for damage hence there wasn't any.

Best one I remember was a keyboard that had the top row (QWERTY...) rearranged to YOURATW*T. I mean, points for effort, but they could've still used the E! If they could steal an A and a T from another keyboard they could've at least remembered to spell 'You're' properly. Edited June 6, 2016 by Garacesh

We bulk buy laptop keyboards for one department and get them for £5 each instead of £25 for the generic ones as a bulk discount! The department claimed they just fell off due to wear and tear until one day they caught a student pulling of and breaking the keys - they then came with 'egg on face' to apologise and tell us we were right all along!
